How to Compare PC Case Temperatures Using Delta T Over Ambient

Imagine comparing two PC case reviews. The first case records a CPU temperature of 72°C, while the second reaches 75°C.

At first glance, the first case appears to provide better cooling.

But what if the first test took place in a 20°C room and the second in a 25°C room?

The temperature readings tell a different story once the surrounding air temperature is considered.

, are important in PC case thermal testing.

They help reviewers distinguish changes in cooling performance from changes in room temperature.

However, temperature normalization is only one part of a reliable testing method.

Why Does Room Temperature Affect PC Case Test Results?

PC cooling systems transfer heat from components into the surrounding air.

Whether a computer uses an air cooler or an AIO liquid cooler, the temperature of the incoming air influences how effectively heat can be removed.

When room temperature increases, CPU and GPU temperatures will generally rise under otherwise similar conditions.

This creates a problem when comparing tests conducted in different environments.

For example, a PC case tested during winter may show lower component temperatures than the same case tested during summer, even when its airflow performance has not changed.

Without knowing the ambient temperature, a reviewer cannot reliably determine how much of that difference comes from the case itself.

This becomes especially important when two cooling configurations differ by only a few degrees.

Delta T over ambient measures how far a component's temperature rises above the temperature of the surrounding air.

Delta T (°C) = Component Temperature (°C) − Ambient Temperature (°C)

The result indicates that the CPU was operating 50°C above the measured ambient temperature.

A lower delta T generally indicates a smaller temperature rise above the incoming air under the conditions tested.

Reviewers can apply this calculation to CPU package temperatures, GPU core temperatures, GPU hotspots, and other relevant sensors.

However, comparisons should use the same sensor type, similar workloads, and controlled system settings.

How Do You Calculate Ambient-Normalized Temperatures?

Consider two hypothetical PC cases tested with the same hardware and workload.

MeasurementCase ACase BAmbient temperature20°C25°CCPU temperature72°C75°CGPU temperature68°C72°CCPU delta T52°C50°CGPU delta T48°C47°C

These values are illustrative, not actual ACEGEEK product test results.

Looking only at raw temperatures, Case A seems to perform better.

After normalization, Case B has a 2°C lower CPU delta and a 1°C lower GPU delta.

This suggests that Case B maintained smaller temperature differences relative to its surrounding air.

If Case B used faster fans or lower CPU power, the normalized figures alone would not establish that its chassis had better airflow.

For a meaningful comparison, reviewers should also report power consumption, fan speeds, and test conditions.

Can a Lower Delta T Prove a PC Case Has Better Cooling?

Ambient normalization reduces the influence of room temperature, but other variables can still change the results.

A CPU consuming 150W generally produces more heat than the same CPU operating at 100W.

If processor power changes between tests, a lower temperature may reflect reduced heat production rather than improved cooling.

Reviewers should record CPU package power and GPU board power alongside temperature measurements.

Automatic fan curves can change cooling performance during a test.

A system operating in a warmer room may increase its fan RPM, improving its delta T while producing more noise.

This is why fixed-speed testing can be useful when isolating the effects of case airflow.

Noise-normalized testing provides another perspective by comparing cooling performance at similar sound levels.

Short benchmarks may not reveal how a PC behaves after prolonged gaming or rendering.

Liquid cooling systems, in particular, need enough time for coolant temperatures to stabilize.

Measurements taken before thermal stabilization can make one cooling configuration appear better simply because it has not fully warmed up.

A reliable test should use repeatable workloads and collect results after temperatures have become reasonably stable.

How Should You Test PC Case Cooling Performance?

A useful PC case test does not need overly complicated equipment, but it should follow a consistent procedure.

Use the same CPU, GPU, motherboard, cooling hardware, and relevant software settings across the comparison.

If the objective is to isolate the chassis, use comparable fan configurations where practical.

Stock-fan testing is also valuable, but it answers a different question: how the case performs with the cooling hardware supplied to buyers.

Step 2: Measure Ambient Temperature Near the Intake

Place a temperature probe near the air entering the case.

Keep it away from exhaust airflow, direct sunlight, and nearby heat sources.

Record ambient temperature throughout the test instead of relying on a single reading.

For a fixed-speed comparison, set consistent fan and pump speeds where possible.

Record actual RPM values because percentage settings do not guarantee identical rotational speeds.

For noise-normalized testing, measure sound levels using a consistent microphone position and acoustic environment.

Include CPU-focused, GPU-focused, and combined workloads.

Allow the system to stabilize before collecting the final temperature measurements.

Combined workloads are particularly useful because they reveal how CPU and GPU cooling systems interact inside the chassis.

Step 5: Calculate Delta T and Repeat the Test

Subtract the ambient temperature measured during the corresponding stable test period from the component temperature.

Repeat the measurements to check consistency.

If two cases differ by only 1°C, consider sensor uncertainty and run-to-run variation before declaring a winner.

How Can You Compare CPU and GPU Temperatures Fairly?

CPU and GPU temperatures should be evaluated together because improving one cooling path can affect another.

For example, a front-mounted radiator configured as intake may deliver cooler external air directly to the CPU radiator.

However, that air becomes warmer as it passes through the radiator and enters the case.

Depending on the chassis and graphics card, this can raise GPU intake temperatures.

A top-mounted radiator configured as exhaust may have a different balance: the CPU radiator can receive warmer internal air, while the GPU benefits from a separate supply of cool intake air.

Neither configuration is universally superior.

The better arrangement depends on your system's workload and cooling priorities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is delta T more useful than CPU temperature when comparing PC cases?

Delta T is often more useful for comparing controlled tests conducted at different ambient temperatures. However, raw CPU temperature remains important for determining actual operating conditions and thermal limits.

Where should I measure ambient temperature during a PC case test?

Measure the incoming air near the case's primary intake, away from exhaust heat and other nearby heat sources. Keep the probe position consistent between tests.

Does a lower ambient-normalized temperature always mean better airflow?

No. CPU or GPU power, cooler efficiency, fan speed, and workload differences can all influence delta T. These conditions must be controlled or disclosed.

How much temperature difference is significant in a PC case review?

There is no universal threshold. A small difference may be meaningful when repeated measurements show low variability, but a 1°C result should not automatically determine a winner without considering test uncertainty.

Should I compare PC case temperatures at the same fan speed or noise level?

Both approaches provide useful information. Fixed-speed testing helps investigate cooling performance under controlled fan settings, while noise-normalized testing shows which configuration cools better at a similar acoustic level.
