Static Pressure Curves Explained for PC Cooling Fans

When a 120 mm cooling fan is rated for 60 CFM but installed behind a dense radiator, dust filter, or restrictive front panel, its advertised airflow no longer describes what reaches the hardware, because the fan must develop enough pressure to overcome the resistance in its path.

So why do we keep judging PC cooling fans by maximum CFM and static pressure alone?

The answer is partly marketing. Two large numbers fit neatly on a product box. A complete fan performance curve takes more effort to explain.

, usually called a P-Q curve, shows the relationship between the pressure a fan develops and the airflow it delivers. It reveals how performance changes under resistance rather than merely advertising what happens at the operating limits.

For radiator cooling, filtered case intake, and dense CPU heatsinks, that distinction can determine whether a fan delivers useful cooling or simply makes more noise.

What Does a Fan Static Pressure Curve Actually Tell You?

Fan static pressure is the pressure difference a fan can develop to overcome resistance in an airflow system.

It is commonly measured in millimeters of water column (mmH₂O) or pascals (Pa).

A fan advertised at 3.0 mmH₂O therefore has a maximum static pressure rating equivalent to approximately 29.4 Pa.

A fan's maximum static pressure generally occurs near zero airflow, while its maximum airflow occurs near zero external static pressure.

Those are different operating conditions.

A fan rated for 70 CFM and 3.0 mmH₂O does not necessarily deliver 70 CFM against 3.0 mmH₂O of resistance.

That is the misconception I would eliminate from almost every fan-buying guide.

For a typical axial PC cooling fan, airflow generally decreases as the pressure requirement increases.

The relationship is not necessarily linear. Fan curves can contain peaks, bends, and regions of unstable operation.

According to the Air Movement and Control Association's

technical explanation of fan performance curves

, fan selection requires examining the relationship between airflow and pressure at the intended operating condition.

A fan might perform extremely well in open air but lose its advantage when mounted against a radiator.

Another might have slightly lower free-air CFM yet maintain more airflow against moderate resistance.

Without the curve, those differences remain hidden.

The Operating Point: Where Fan Specifications Meet Reality

Every cooling system introduces resistance.

A 360 mm radiator, a fine dust filter, and a nearly sealed glass-front panel impose different demands on the same fan.

Where those curves intersect is the fan's operating point.

That point represents the approximate airflow and pressure the fan delivers in that installation.

For many turbulent airflow systems, pressure loss can be approximated by:

In this simplified relationship, doubling airflow requires approximately four times the pressure difference.

Real PC cases are more complicated because of leakage, recirculation, inlet turbulence, and changing airflow paths. Nevertheless, the equation explains why restriction can quickly become expensive in terms of fan speed and noise.

Why Static Pressure vs Airflow Is the Wrong Argument

The usual buying advice says static-pressure fans belong on radiators while airflow fans belong in cases.

That is a useful starting point, but it is not the whole answer.

Consider a filtered front intake positioned close to tempered glass. It might impose more resistance than a relatively open heatsink or radiator arrangement.

A fan does not respond to the marketing category of its mounting position.

Independent Testing: What the Numbers Really Show

Three pieces of evidence expose the limitations of buying fans by headline specifications: an independent laboratory measurement, a controlled PC fan comparison, and a real case-airflow investigation.

1. Noctua NF-A12x25 G2: Published Ratings vs Laboratory Measurements

The Noctua NF-A12x25 G2 PWM is a useful example because both manufacturer specifications and independent measurements are publicly available.

Noctua advertises 63.15 CFM of maximum airflow and 3.14 mmH₂O of maximum static pressure at a nominal maximum speed of 1,800 RPM.

Cybenetics laboratory evaluation dated July 29, 2025

reports a different set of measured values.

and Cybenetics. One mmAq is approximately equivalent to one mmH₂O. Different laboratory methods and acoustic test conditions can produce different results; the figures are not proof of inaccurate manufacturer claims.

This is not evidence that Noctua makes a poor fan.

It is evidence that test conditions matter.

Cybenetics also reports 49.16 CFM of airflow and 1.92 mmAq of pressure under its respective 25 dB(A) performance tests. Those figures are separate measurements and should not be interpreted as one simultaneous P-Q operating point.

The lesson is bigger than any particular brand.

Manufacturer maximum ratings are not a substitute for independent, comparable performance measurements.

2. A January 2026 Fan Comparison Reveals the Acoustic Penalty of Restriction

, Tom's Hardware tested the ARCTIC P12 Pro against the Noctua NF-A12x25 G2 and other 120 mm fans.

The review evaluated unrestricted airflow, radiator-mounted performance, and airflow through a simulated mesh-and-filter intake.

At equivalent measured noise levels, mounting the ARCTIC P12 Pro on a radiator reduced its achievable RPM by approximately 5%, while the original Noctua NF-A12x25 suffered about a 7% reduction.

The NF-A12x25 G2 behaved differently: it maintained approximately 2% higher RPM on average in the radiator configuration at comparable measured noise levels.

More interestingly, the noise-normalized airflow comparison showed that the Noctua G2 maintained a larger advantage over the ARCTIC P12 Pro when radiator resistance was introduced.

This is the kind of comparison I trust more than a specification-sheet contest.

It accounts for the fact that a buyer does not simply want maximum airflow.

They want useful airflow without unnecessary acoustic penalties.

The findings also challenge another assumption: RPM alone is not a reliable indicator of effective airflow. Blade geometry and acoustic behavior can make one fan more productive than another at the same sound level.

3. GamersNexus Demonstrated How Restriction Can Overwhelm Additional Fans

A separate investigation makes the system-resistance problem impossible to ignore.

, GamersNexus measured the consequences of a highly restrictive front-panel design.

Removing the front panel reduced the CPU temperature rise above ambient by 14.1°C compared with the stock configuration.

Adding an extra front intake fan, however, improved the CPU result by only 2.5°C, while the GPU temperature actually increased in that particular configuration.

These measurements do not constitute a direct P-Q test. They are system-level thermal results.

But they demonstrate what happens when an airflow restriction dominates a cooling configuration.

More fans did not solve the underlying intake problem.

deserves attention before purchasing expensive replacement fans.

A better airflow path can sometimes produce a larger improvement than a more powerful fan.

How to Choose the Best Static Pressure Fans for Radiators

1. Evaluate Airflow at Meaningful Resistance

Maximum static pressure is an endpoint, not a complete performance ranking.

Look for a published P-Q curve and compare airflow in the intermediate region, where a radiator or heatsink is likely to operate.

If no curve is available, seek independent radiator or restricted-airflow testing.

2. Compare at Equal Noise, Not Just Equal RPM

A fan spinning at 2,500 RPM might outperform a competitor at 1,500 RPM.

That does not automatically make it the better choice for a quiet gaming PC.

Noise-normalized testing reveals how much cooling performance is available at a given sound level.

This matters particularly for 240 mm, 280 mm, and 360 mm AIO radiators, where several fans can contribute to overall system noise.

3. Match the Fan to the Entire Airflow Path

Fin density, intake geometry, dust filtration, mounting clearance, and fan speed also influence resistance.

Static Pressure Curves Explained for PC Cooling Fans

Numbers aren't airflow.

When a 120 mm cooling fan is rated for 60 CFM but installed behind a dense radiator, dust filter, or restrictive front panel, its advertised airflow no longer describes what reaches the hardware, because the fan must develop enough pressure to overcome the resistance in its path.

What Does a Fan Static Pressure Curve Actually Tell You?

Fan static pressure is the pressure difference a fan can develop to overcome resistance in an airflow system.

It is commonly measured in millimeters of water column (mmH₂O) or pascals (Pa).

The conversion is straightforward:

1 mmH₂O ≈ 9.81 Pa

A fan advertised at 3.0 mmH₂O therefore has a maximum static pressure rating equivalent to approximately 29.4 Pa.

But that number needs context.

Understanding the P-Q Graph

A PC fan P-Q curve uses two axes:

P (Pressure): The vertical axis, measured in mmH₂O or Pa.

Q (Airflow): The horizontal axis, measured in CFM or m³/h.

For a typical axial PC cooling fan, airflow generally decreases as the pressure requirement increases.

The relationship is not necessarily linear. Fan curves can contain peaks, bends, and regions of unstable operation.

According to the Air Movement and Control Association's technical explanation of fan performance curves, fan selection requires examining the relationship between airflow and pressure at the intended operating condition.

That is where the curve becomes useful.

A fan might perform extremely well in open air but lose its advantage when mounted against a radiator.

Another might have slightly lower free-air CFM yet maintain more airflow against moderate resistance.

Without the curve, those differences remain hidden.

For a closer explanation of graph terminology, ACEGEEK's guide to what a fan P-Q curve means for PC buyers covers the fundamentals.

For many turbulent airflow systems, pressure loss can be approximated by:

ΔP = K × Q²

ΔP = Pressure loss

K = System resistance coefficient

Q = Volumetric airflow

GPU temperature rise fell by 10.1°C.

How to Choose the Best Static Pressure Fans for Radiators

I would use four criteria.

This matters particularly for 240 mm, 280 mm, and 360 mm AIO radiators, where several fans can contribute to overall system noise.

3. Match the Fan to the Entire Airflow Path

Radiator thickness is only one variable.

Fin density, intake geometry, dust filtration, mounting clearance, and fan speed also influence resistance.

A thick radiator behind a restrictive front panel may require a different fan strategy from the same radiator mounted in an unobstructed location.

For a practical installation comparison, see ACEGEEK's guide to choosing fans for radiators versus case airflow.

4. Demand Better Performance Documentation

Consider the published specifications of the ACEGEEK Prime Fan:

120 × 120 × 25 mm dimensions

800–1,850 RPM speed range, with ±10% tolerance

60 CFM airflow rating, with ±10% tolerance

1.90 mmH₂O pressure rating, with ±10% tolerance

These figures help establish the fan's stated capabilities.

They do not establish how much airflow it delivers through a particular radiator at 1,000 RPM or 1,500 RPM.

That question requires more data.

A full pressure-airflow curve, measured under documented conditions, would make the specification considerably more useful.

I would apply that standard to every manufacturer, regardless of price or reputation.

How to Test Fan Performance in Your Own PC

A home test cannot reproduce a professional pressure-flow laboratory, but it can reveal whether your cooling system suffers from unnecessary resistance.

Start with a repeatable workload and record:

CPU and GPU temperatures

Ambient room temperature

Fan RPM

CPU and GPU power consumption

Test duration and fan-control settings

Then change only one variable at a time.

For instance, run the same workload with the front panel installed and removed, maintaining consistent fan speeds and power conditions.

Compare temperatures relative to ambient.

Temperature rise = Component temperature − Ambient temperature

If CPU temperature is 75°C in a 25°C room, the temperature rise is 50°C.

If removing the front panel substantially reduces that temperature rise under otherwise comparable conditions, the intake path deserves investigation.

The test does not tell you the exact CFM delivered or the full P-Q curve, but it can identify a practical cooling limitation.

And that is often more actionable than buying another fan based on maximum pressure alone.

FAQs

What is static pressure in PC fans?

Static pressure in PC fans is the pressure difference a cooling fan can develop against airflow resistance, commonly measured in mmH₂O or pascals, and it describes the fan's ability to overcome obstacles such as radiator fins, dust filters, CPU heatsinks, and restrictive ventilation openings in a computer case.

A higher maximum rating indicates greater pressure capability under the stated conditions, not necessarily better cooling in every installation.

How do you read a fan static pressure curve?

A fan static pressure curve is read by locating airflow on the horizontal axis and pressure on the vertical axis, then identifying how much airflow the fan can deliver at a particular pressure; the intersection with the system resistance curve indicates the expected operating point for that installation.

Always check the fan's tested RPM and measurement units before comparing different curves.

Is higher static pressure always better for radiator fans?

Higher static pressure is not always better for radiator fans because maximum pressure describes performance near the low-airflow end of a fan's operating range, whereas actual radiator cooling depends on how much air the fan delivers through the radiator at the intended speed and acceptable noise level.

A lower-rated fan may perform better in a particular installation if its intermediate pressure-flow characteristics are more favorable.

What matters more for PC cooling, CFM or static pressure?

CFM and static pressure describe different but connected aspects of PC fan performance: CFM measures the volume of airflow, while static pressure describes the pressure available to overcome resistance; neither specification alone establishes installed cooling effectiveness because actual airflow depends on the fan curve and the system resistance.

For a restrictive radiator or filtered intake, airflow delivered against resistance is the measurement worth prioritizing.

Final Thoughts: Buy the Operating Point, Not the Marketing Number

A fan with the highest static pressure rating is not automatically the best radiator fan.

A fan with the highest CFM rating is not automatically the best case fan.

The real performance question is simpler:

How much air can this fan deliver through my actual cooling system at a noise level I can tolerate?

The P-Q curve helps answer that question. Independent restricted-airflow tests make the answer more useful.

Before buying replacement fans, identify the restrictions in your current build, check whether your preferred models have published performance curves, and compare cooling results under equivalent operating conditions.

What Is a P-Q Curve and Why Should Fan Buyers Care?

A fan advertised at 60 CFM may genuinely reach something close to that figure in a low-resistance test, yet once the same fan sits behind a radiator, dust filter, restrictive mesh panel, grille, or narrow glass-front intake, the airflow the computer actually receives can be dramatically lower.

So why are buyers still comparing fans by maximum CFM?

how much airflow does this fan deliver at the pressure my system will impose?

P means pressure. Q means volumetric airflow. Put them together and you get a graph showing how much air a fan can move as resistance increases.

For a buyer deciding between two 120 mm fans, choosing radiator fans, comparing static-pressure models, or trying to cool a restrictive gaming PC, the P-Q curve may tell you more than the headline airflow number ever will.

How to Read a Fan P-Q Curve Without Guessing

You do not need to be a fluid-dynamics engineer to read one.

But you do need to stop looking for one magic number.

For PC fans, manufacturers commonly publish airflow in

Maximum CFM is typically associated with little external resistance. Your installed fan does not enjoy that luxury.

Put a fan behind a 360 mm radiator and the resistance changes.

Move the same fan behind a narrow side-slot intake and you have changed the operating system yet again.

North Carolina State University's engineering material explains the same underlying behavior: at a constant fan speed, pressure differential and volume flow are linked, and increasing the pressure requirement generally reduces the available flow.

NC State Extension — Fan Curves and Ventilation Engineering

Pressure tells us how much resistance the fan can work against.

PC fan manufacturers often express static pressure in

, while engineering sources may use pascals or inches of water gauge.

A fan rated at 2.5 mmH₂O therefore has considerably more maximum pressure capability than a fan rated at 1.0 mmH₂O.

But here is where spec-sheet shopping goes wrong again.

Maximum pressure normally occurs near zero flow.

Those two maximum figures generally represent different ends of the curve.

This is the part buyers should care about.

The case, radiator, filter, grille, and every other obstruction together create a

The University of Florida gives an unusually clear real-world example. In its published ventilation data, one fan produces

Yes, that is a much larger ventilation fan than a 120 mm PC fan.

That operating point is where marketing meets physics.

The DOE fan sourcebook goes further. It shows that some fan/system combinations can enter unstable operating regions where interactions between the fan curve and system curve create cyclic behavior, reduced efficiency, added noise, and greater component wear.

A PC case fan is not an industrial blower, so I would not pretend the failure modes are identical.

But the buying lesson absolutely carries over:

where a fan operates on its curve matters.

Why 60 CFM and 1.90 mmH₂O Still Do Not Tell the Whole Story

Take a current ACEGEEK product as a concrete example.

What if Fan A maintains 45 CFM around a moderate restriction while Fan B falls to 38 CFM?

Now Fan A is the better radiator fan despite losing the maximum-spec contest.

Perhaps Fan B's blade geometry holds considerably more flow as resistance rises. In that installation, its higher pressure capability becomes genuinely useful.

Without intermediate pressure-versus-flow data, buyers cannot know with much confidence.

This is why I consider a complete P-Q curve a sign of mature fan documentation. Maximum figures are sales-friendly. Curves are buyer-friendly.

The System Resistance Curve Is the Missing Half of Fan Selection

radiator fins, heatsink fins, dust filters, front-panel mesh, stamped fan grilles, narrow side vents, drive cages, decorative panels, badly positioned glass, cable obstruction, and even another restrictive airflow path downstream.

how front-panel design affects PC case cooling

makes this point particularly well: two cases can both have three 120 mm intake fans while imposing completely different resistance because panel area, filter density, grille geometry, and intake clearance differ.

In many airflow systems, pressure loss rises roughly with the square of airflow. Double the flow and the pressure requirement can rise sharply rather than merely doubling.

The University of Florida describes the conventional ventilation system relationship as approximately parabolic, while Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory notes that real system curves may also contain filter, coil, leakage, and other effects that make the model more complicated.

Mesh plus filter plus radiator is another.

What Is a P-Q Curve and Why Should Fan Buyers Care?

Numbers mislead buyers.

The better question is: how much airflow does this fan deliver at the pressure my system will impose?

That is exactly what a Fan P-Q Curve answers.

P means pressure. Q means volumetric airflow. Put them together and you get a graph showing how much air a fan can move as resistance increases.

That sounds like engineering paperwork.

It isn't.

For a buyer deciding between two 120 mm fans, choosing radiator fans, comparing static-pressure models, or trying to cool a restrictive gaming PC, the P-Q curve may tell you more than the headline airflow number ever will.

A Fan P-Q Curve Is the Specification Buyers Rarely See

A Fan P-Q Curve, also called a fan performance curve or fan pressure airflow curve, plots the relationship between fan pressure and airflow at a defined operating speed.

Usually:

Q, or airflow, sits on the horizontal X-axis and may be expressed in CFM or m³/h.

P, or pressure, sits on the vertical Y-axis and may be expressed in Pa, mmH₂O, or in. wg.

The curve normally moves from higher pressure at low airflow toward higher airflow at low pressure.

The U.S. Department of Energy describes fan performance as a relationship between developed pressure, required power, and airflow, and specifically identifies understanding that relationship as central to fan selection. Its engineering sourcebook also shows why the useful answer is not simply the highest number printed on a box.

There are two endpoints buyers should understand.

At zero or near-zero airflow, the fan is pushing against very high resistance. This is close to its maximum static-pressure condition.

At zero or near-zero static pressure, the fan is moving air freely. This is close to its maximum airflow or free-air condition.

Real PCs live between those endpoints.

That middle matters.

A radiator is not zero resistance. Neither is a dust filter. Neither is perforated steel, dense mesh, a restrictive front panel, a CPU heatsink, nor a fan mounted several millimeters behind tempered glass.

That is why ACEGEEK's guide to airflow fans versus static-pressure fans makes an important distinction: free-air CFM and maximum static pressure are opposite ends of the same performance relationship, not two independent trophies.

How to Read a Fan P-Q Curve Without Guessing

You do not need to be a fluid-dynamics engineer to read one.

But you do need to stop looking for one magic number.

Start With the Q Axis: Airflow

Q represents volume flow.

For PC fans, manufacturers commonly publish airflow in CFM—cubic feet per minute. Larger numbers look attractive because larger numbers sell products.

That is where trouble begins.

Maximum CFM is typically associated with little external resistance. Your installed fan does not enjoy that luxury.

Put a fan behind a 360 mm radiator and the resistance changes.

Add a filter and it changes again.

Then Read the P Axis: Pressure

Pressure tells us how much resistance the fan can work against.

PC fan manufacturers often express static pressure in mmH₂O, while engineering sources may use pascals or inches of water gauge.

A rough conversion is useful:

1 mmH₂O ≈ 9.81 Pa

A fan rated at 2.5 mmH₂O therefore has considerably more maximum pressure capability than a fan rated at 1.0 mmH₂O.

But here is where spec-sheet shopping goes wrong again.

Maximum pressure normally occurs near zero flow.

You cannot say:

Fan A has 3.0 mmH₂O, therefore it will push 3.0 mmH₂O while simultaneously delivering its advertised maximum CFM.

Those two maximum figures generally represent different ends of the curve.

The curve connects them.

Find the Fan Operating Point

This is the part buyers should care about.

A fan has its fan performance curve.

The case, radiator, filter, grille, and every other obstruction together create a system resistance curve.

Where those two curves intersect is the fan operating point.

That point tells you approximately how much pressure and airflow the complete system settles at.

The University of Florida gives an unusually clear real-world example. In its published ventilation data, one fan produces 10,200 CFM in free air, but only 9,200 CFM at 1/8-inch static pressure, 7,400 CFM at 1/4 inch, and 4,300 CFM at 3/8 inch. Same fan. Very different delivered airflow.

University of Florida IFAS — Fans for Greenhouses

Yes, that is a much larger ventilation fan than a 120 mm PC fan.

The scale changes.

The physics does not.

A PC case fan is not an industrial blower, so I would not pretend the failure modes are identical.

But the buying lesson absolutely carries over: where a fan operates on its curve matters.

Why 60 CFM and 1.90 mmH₂O Still Do Not Tell the Whole Story

Take a current ACEGEEK product as a concrete example.

The ACEGEEK Prime Fan product page lists:

120 × 120 × 25 mm dimensions, an 800–1,850 RPM ±10% speed range, 60 CFM ±10% air volume, 1.90 mmH₂O ±10% air pressure, 17.8–32.3 dBA ±10% noise, and a listed 30,000-hour service life.

Those figures are useful.

They are not a complete Fan P-Q Curve.

Suppose another 120 mm fan advertises:

65 CFM.

2.2 mmH₂O.

Looks better, right?

Maybe.

What if Fan A maintains 45 CFM around a moderate restriction while Fan B falls to 38 CFM?

Now Fan A is the better radiator fan despite losing the maximum-spec contest.

Or reverse it.

There is a difference.

The System Resistance Curve Is the Missing Half of Fan Selection

Fans do not operate alone.

Your system pushes back.

In a PC, resistance can come from:

radiator fins, heatsink fins, dust filters, front-panel mesh, stamped fan grilles, narrow side vents, drive cages, decorative panels, badly positioned glass, cable obstruction, and even another restrictive airflow path downstream.

ACEGEEK's analysis of how front-panel design affects PC case cooling makes this point particularly well: two cases can both have three 120 mm intake fans while imposing completely different resistance because panel area, filter density, grille geometry, and intake clearance differ.

This is where the system resistance curve enters.

That distinction matters for a PC buyer.

A clean mesh front is one system.

Mesh plus a fine dust filter is another.

Mesh plus filter plus radiator is another.

A clogged filter is another again.

Same fan.

Different operating point.

Static Pressure vs Airflow Is Really a Curve Question

I dislike the way fan marketing has turned static pressure vs airflow into two separate product tribes.

“Airflow fan.”

“Pressure fan.”

Problem solved.

Not really.

A useful fan must produce both pressure and airflow. What changes is how well it maintains airflow as resistance increases.

For an open rear exhaust, I care more about strong airflow and acoustic behavior at the RPM range I expect to use.

For a radiator, restrictive intake, or dense filter, I want to know what happens farther up the pressure portion of the curve.

That is why ACEGEEK's guide to identifying radiator fans versus case airflow fans is a sensible next read: it connects CFM, static pressure, RPM, PWM control, obstruction, and real mounting position instead of pretending one headline number decides everything.

Want the best fan for high static pressure?

Do not automatically buy the model with the largest mmH₂O figure.

Ask for the curve.

Then identify the expected restriction.

Then compare airflow at that region.

That is a much harder purchasing process. It is also a much better one.

RPM Moves the Entire Fan Performance Curve

Fan speed changes the equation.

Under the conventional fan affinity laws, and assuming comparable geometry and operating conditions:

Airflow changes roughly with RPM.

Pressure changes roughly with RPM².

Power changes roughly with RPM³.

The DOE sourcebook explicitly presents those relationships as part of fan-selection engineering.

That explains why increasing fan speed can recover performance against restriction.

It also explains why brute force is a lousy default strategy.

Higher RPM usually brings more aerodynamic noise, motor noise, bearing noise, turbulence, and power demand.

So the best setup is rarely:

Run everything at maximum RPM.

I would rather see a fan produce adequate airflow around 800–1,300 RPM than require 1,800–2,500 RPM just to overcome an unnecessarily restrictive intake.

That is also why case design belongs in the fan-buying conversation. ACEGEEK's high-airflow PC build guide correctly treats fan performance and chassis restriction as one system rather than two shopping categories.

Why Test Conditions Matter More Than Marketing Copy

There is a broader industry signal here.

The U.S. Department of Energy currently specifies uniform test procedures for covered fans and blowers under 10 CFR 431.174, and DOE states that regulated representations of fan energy efficiency and energy use must follow those procedures. DOE's current page also notes that, as of its latest update, no federal energy-conservation standard is presently in force for the covered fans and blowers category.

U.S. Department of Energy — Fans and Blowers

That regulation is not a PC-fan buying rule.

But the principle is relevant.

A performance number is only meaningful when you understand how it was measured.

Was airflow tested in free air?

What pressure existed?

At what RPM?

At what voltage?

At what air density?

Was a grille fitted?

How was noise measured?

At what distance?

You can print “70 CFM” in giant type.

That still does not tell me what happens behind a 27 mm radiator, restrictive filter, or narrow side intake.

What I Would Demand Before Comparing Two Fans

When I compare fan specifications, I would rank the information roughly like this:

Full P-Q curve at the relevant RPM, preferably with multiple RPM curves rather than only maximum speed.

Static pressure and airflow units clearly stated, including the test standard where available.

Noise data across several speeds, not just one minimum or maximum dBA value.

RPM range and PWM behavior, because the useful operating zone matters more than a heroic maximum.

Installation context, especially if the fan is being marketed for radiators, heatsinks, restrictive intake panels, or open case exhaust.

Repeatable independent testing, particularly for premium fans whose price is justified by claims of better pressure-to-noise performance.

Notice what is missing.

RGB count.

Infinity mirrors.

Lighting zones.

Those are product features. They are not fan-performance measurements.

I like good-looking hardware too. But if the fan is supposed to move heat, I want airflow data before decoration.

FAQs

What is a P-Q curve?

A P-Q curve is a fan performance graph showing how airflow quantity, represented by Q, changes as pressure, represented by P, changes at a specified fan speed; it lets buyers see the usable performance between maximum free-air airflow and maximum static pressure instead of judging a fan from two isolated endpoint specifications.

For PC cooling, that middle region is usually where the fan actually operates because radiators, filters, mesh panels, grilles, and heatsinks all create resistance.

How do you read a Fan P-Q Curve?

To read a Fan P-Q Curve, locate airflow on the horizontal axis and pressure on the vertical axis, then follow the fan's performance line to determine how much flow remains at a particular pressure; the actual fan operating point occurs where that fan curve intersects the system resistance curve.

Do not simply look for the highest CFM or highest mmH₂O value. Compare the part of the curve that matches your installation.

What is the difference between maximum airflow and maximum static pressure?

Maximum airflow is the greatest volume of air a fan can deliver under very low resistance, while maximum static pressure is the greatest pressure the fan can develop when airflow approaches zero; these values describe opposite ends of the Fan P-Q Curve and generally cannot occur simultaneously during normal operation.

That is why adding 70 CFM and 3 mmH₂O to the same marketing table does not describe one real operating condition.

What is a fan operating point?

A fan operating point is the pressure-and-airflow condition where the fan's P-Q performance curve intersects the resistance curve of the system, representing the approximate flow the installed fan can actually deliver through filters, radiators, mesh, ducts, grilles, heatsinks, or other restrictions rather than its unrestricted laboratory maximum.

Change the system resistance and you move that point, even when the fan itself has not changed.

Why does a radiator reduce fan airflow?

A radiator reduces fan airflow because its closely spaced fins, tubes, frame, and boundary layers create resistance that requires the fan to develop pressure before air can pass through; as required pressure rises, the fan typically moves to a lower-flow point on its P-Q curve compared with unrestricted free-air operation.

This is why radiator selection should consider the complete fan pressure airflow curve, not only maximum CFM.

Is a higher static-pressure fan always better?

A higher static-pressure fan is not automatically better because maximum pressure is measured near the low-flow end of its performance range, while real cooling depends on how much airflow the fan maintains at the system's actual resistance, together with RPM, acoustic behavior, blade design, frame sealing, efficiency, and control characteristics.

For an unrestricted rear exhaust, paying more for extreme pressure capability may produce little practical benefit.

What is the best fan for high static pressure?

The best fan for high static pressure is a model that maintains strong airflow at the pressure imposed by the intended radiator, heatsink, filter, or restrictive intake while remaining acceptable in noise and speed; the best choice therefore comes from comparing P-Q curves at realistic operating points rather than ranking maximum mmH₂O alone.

For radiator use, I would prioritize pressure retention through the middle of the curve, then compare acoustics at the RPM needed to reach the cooling target.

Why should fan buyers care about a system resistance curve?

A system resistance curve shows how much pressure a specific cooling path requires as airflow rises, allowing buyers to combine real case, filter, radiator, grille, or heatsink resistance with a fan's P-Q curve and identify the resulting operating point rather than assuming advertised free-air airflow will survive unchanged after installation.

That is the engineering reason two identical fans can deliver noticeably different cooling in two different PC cases.

Your Next Step: Buy the Curve, Not the Headline Number

Ask one question before your next fan purchase:

Where is the P-Q curve?

If the manufacturer provides it, compare the fan at the pressure your installation is likely to create.

If it does not, treat maximum CFM and maximum static pressure as useful clues—not a complete performance prediction.

Then look at the rest of the cooling path. Radiator. Filter. Mesh. Glass clearance. Grilles. Fan speed. Exhaust area.

Because the fan does not decide its airflow alone.

The system does.

For the practical PC side of that decision, continue with ACEGEEK's airflow versus static-pressure fan guide, then compare radiator and case-fan requirements and finally check how front-panel restriction changes cooling performance before you spend money on another fan pack.

Maximum CFM and maximum static pressure describe two opposite ends of fan performance. A P-Q curve shows what happens between them—and that middle ground is where radiators, filters, mesh panels, and real PC cooling actually operate.
