GPU Clearance With a Front Radiator: The Measurement Buyers Miss

When I audit a PC case specification, I do not treat its advertised maximum GPU length as usable GPU clearance until I know exactly where that number starts, where it ends, whether the front fan bracket occupies the same physical zone, and what happens when a radiator, fans, tubes, screws, and the graphics card all arrive at the party together.

The GPU Clearance Number on the Spec Sheet Is Only the Starting Point

GPU clearance normally describes the longitudinal distance available for a graphics card from the rear PCIe mounting plane toward the front of the chassis.

A graphics card does not interact with a specification table. It interacts with steel brackets, fans, radiators, tubing, cables, filters, and whatever else occupies the same internal volume.

If the manual does not say, I would not assume the most favorable scenario.

A “360 mm radiator” is not 360 mm thick.

Now you are measuring physical hardware instead of marketing categories.

Step 5: Determine Which Parts Actually Intrude Into the GPU Zone

This is where the best compatibility checks stop being simple subtraction.

GPU Clearance With a Front Radiator: The Measurement Buyers Miss

Three millimeters matter.

Why would I trust a clearance figure measured in an empty case?

That is the mistake.

A case can advertise 360 mm GPU clearance and 360 mm front radiator support without promising that both specifications are simultaneously available. Those are two separate statements about an empty chassis.

Once a front radiator enters the calculation, the number buyers need is no longer maximum GPU clearance.

It is remaining GPU clearance after the radiator-and-fan stack is installed.

And the difference can easily exceed 50 mm.

The GPU Clearance Number on the Spec Sheet Is Only the Starting Point

GPU clearance normally describes the longitudinal distance available for a graphics card from the rear PCIe mounting plane toward the front of the chassis.

Useful number.

Incomplete number.

A graphics card does not interact with a specification table. It interacts with steel brackets, fans, radiators, tubing, cables, filters, and whatever else occupies the same internal volume.

ACEGEEK's broader guide to GPU and radiator clearance math for tight chassis designs makes the same distinction: GPU fit is a three-dimensional packaging problem rather than a single advertised length.

For a front-mounted radiator, however, I would make the calculation even simpler before looking at anything else:

Usable GPU clearance = advertised GPU clearance − front radiator thickness − front fan thickness − other intrusions

That equation catches an uncomfortable number of supposedly compatible builds.

Suppose the case advertises:

Maximum GPU clearance: 360 mm

Front radiator support: 360 mm

Radiator thickness: 27 mm

Fan thickness: 25 mm

The cooling stack is:

27 mm + 25 mm = 52 mm

If the manufacturer's 360 mm GPU figure was measured with that front mounting zone empty, your theoretical remaining length becomes:

360 mm − 52 mm = 308 mm

Now put a 304 mm GPU into that space.

Four millimeters remain.

I would not call that comfortable compatibility. I would call it a warning.

Real Hardware Shows Why Front Radiator GPU Clearance Gets Ugly Fast

This is not theoretical arithmetic built around imaginary parts.

NVIDIA currently lists the GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition at 304 mm long and 137 mm wide, with 575 W Total Graphics Power. More importantly for case fitment, NVIDIA's own installation guidance says builders should plan for a 304 × 137 × 61 mm card envelope and approximately 36 mm of additional space for power cables. NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 5090 specifications

That is my first reality check.

The second is the radiator.

Corsair specifies its iCUE LINK TITAN 360 RX RGB with a 396 × 120 × 27 mm radiator and three 25 mm-thick fans. That produces a nominal 52 mm radiator-and-fan stack before mounting details or any additional safety margin. Corsair TITAN 360 RX specifications

And 52 mm is not even the thick end of the market.

ARCTIC's Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 uses a 398 × 120 × 38 mm radiator, while its P12 Pro fans measure 25 mm thick. That makes the assembled radiator-and-fan depth approximately 63 mm. ARCTIC explicitly compares its 38 mm radiator with conventional 27 mm designs. ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 specifications ARCTIC P12 Pro fan specifications

Eleven extra millimeters.

Sounds trivial?

Not when your GPU had eight millimeters left.

This table is deliberately harsh because it assumes the radiator-and-fan stack projects into the published GPU envelope.

Some cases do not.

A manufacturer may recess the fans toward the front panel, place the radiator outside the nominal GPU measurement zone, or calculate GPU clearance with certain front hardware already installed.

Good.

Then document it.

What I reject is the lazy assumption that “supports a 360 mm front radiator” + “supports a 360 mm GPU” automatically means both fit together.

They might.

They might not.

ACEGEEK's article on why radiator thickness breaks otherwise compatible builds is useful here because radiator length and radiator depth answer completely different compatibility questions. A 360 mm label describes the radiator class; it does not tell you how many millimeters that assembly projects toward the graphics card.

A Real ACEGEEK Case Shows Why Configuration Matters

Take the ACEGEEK Puzzle as an example of how a buyer should read a case specification.

The published specifications list:

410 mm maximum GPU clearance

360 mm front radiator support

360 mm top radiator support

Three front 120 mm or 140 mm fan positions

ATX, E-ATX, M-ATX, and ITX motherboard support

Those are useful numbers.

But if I were planning a 350 mm board-partner GPU and a front-mounted 360 mm AIO, I would still verify whether that 410 mm maximum graphics card clearance applies with the front radiator installed.

Why?

Because a generic 52 mm front cooling stack subtracted from 410 mm would produce 358 mm.

That is suddenly close.

A 63 mm stack would mathematically leave 347 mm.

Now the 350 mm graphics card that looked absurdly safe against a 410 mm specification becomes questionable.

This does not mean the Puzzle necessarily loses exactly 52 or 63 mm—the chassis geometry must be measured in the intended configuration. It means the buyer has identified the right question before purchasing.

That difference matters.

The Measurement Buyers Miss Is the Radiator's Installed Depth

Most people looking up how to measure GPU clearance with a front radiator start by finding GPU length.

That is only half the job.

Step 1: Get the Exact GPU Length

Do not search only by GPU family.

“RTX 5090 length” is not enough.

NVIDIA explicitly notes that card dimensions vary by add-in-board manufacturer. A Founders Edition specification cannot certify a different vendor's cooler design.

Find the exact SKU.

Record:

Full card length

Card width

Card thickness

Slot count

Power connector position

Power cable exit direction

ACEGEEK's guide to choosing a PC case for large triple-fan GPUs is worth using alongside this measurement because today's oversized graphics cards introduce thickness, cable and airflow requirements that a basic length check misses.

Step 2: Find the Case's Maximum GPU Clearance

Write down the manufacturer's number.

But put an asterisk next to it.

You need to know under what configuration that figure was measured.

Ask:

Front fans installed?

No front fans?

Radiator installed?

Drive cage installed?

Front bracket installed?

Reservoir installed?

Push or pull fan arrangement?

If the manual does not say, I would not assume the most favorable scenario.

Step 3: Measure Radiator Thickness

A “360 mm radiator” is not 360 mm thick.

That 360 mm designation refers to its three-120-mm-fan class, not its depth.

Actual radiator depth may be around:

27 mm

30 mm

38 mm

45 mm

or more

That variation can completely change front radiator GPU clearance.

Step 4: Add Fan Thickness

Standard fans are often around 25 mm thick.

Therefore:

27 mm radiator + 25 mm fans = 52 mm

38 mm radiator + 25 mm fans = 63 mm

Now you are measuring physical hardware instead of marketing categories.

Step 5: Determine Which Parts Actually Intrude Into the GPU Zone

This is where the best compatibility checks stop being simple subtraction.

Sometimes:

Fans sit between the chassis and front panel.

The radiator sits inside the main chamber.

Both radiator and fans sit inside.

A recessed mounting rail partially hides the fans.

A front bracket adds several millimeters.

Tube fittings extend toward the card.

A removable drive cage becomes the actual limit.

So I want a side-view drawing.

Not a glamour photo.

Measure from the PCIe expansion-slot mounting plane to the nearest obstruction at the height of the GPU nose.

That is your real PC case GPU clearance.

Do Not Confuse GPU Length Clearance With Power-Cable Clearance

There is another trap here.

A GPU can fit lengthwise and still fail the build.

NVIDIA's RTX 5090 installation guidance says to plan approximately 36 mm of additional space for power cables. That measurement primarily affects lateral space between the GPU connector region and the side panel rather than the longitudinal front-radiator calculation, but it proves why the phrase “my GPU fits” is dangerously vague.

You need at least three separate checks:

Length clearance: rear PCIe plane → front obstruction

Width clearance: motherboard/GPU → side panel

Thickness clearance: PCIe slots → nearby fans, bottom intake, or adjacent cards

Then add radiator geometry.

That is why I dislike compatibility calculators that return one green tick.

Mechanical packaging is not binary until every collision zone has been checked.

Front Radiator Placement Can Also Change GPU Cooling

There is another cost that does not appear in the millimeter calculation.

Air temperature.

A front radiator configured as intake pulls cool room air through the radiator first. The CPU cooler benefits, but some of that heat enters the case before reaching the graphics card.

A high-power GPU may therefore receive warmer intake air than it would with an unobstructed mesh front.

For a modest GPU, that trade may be irrelevant.

For something approaching the 575 W TGP class represented by NVIDIA's RTX 5090, I would at least think about it.

And this is where case architecture matters.

If your chassis offers strong bottom or side intake, those fans can feed the GPU without making it live entirely on radiator-heated air. ACEGEEK's guide to configuring side intake in a panoramic PC case discusses this exact airflow logic: give the GPU a direct path to outside air and provide a controlled top or rear exhaust route.

Front radiator placement is therefore not merely a fitment choice.

It is an airflow choice.

How Much Spare GPU Clearance Do I Actually Want?

I do not like zero-margin builds.

Yes, a 304 mm GPU can theoretically occupy a 305 mm cavity.

No, I would not design around it.

A small margin has to absorb:

Manufacturing tolerances

Screw heads

Fan frames

Bracket flex

GPU end-cap geometry

Tube positioning

Installation angle

Cable routing

Future servicing

I would prefer roughly 10–20 mm of usable longitudinal margin after the complete front cooling system is installed, especially with an expensive triple-fan graphics card.

That is a planning preference, not an industry standard.

But consider the alternative.

A 304 mm card inside 308 mm of theoretical remaining space gives you four millimeters.

Four.

If a bracket lip consumes 2 mm and the GPU's decorative cooler shell extends farther than the dimension you copied from a retailer, your spreadsheet was technically impressive right up until the side panel came off for the second time.

Front Radiator GPU Clearance: The Buying Checklist I Would Use

Before paying for the case, GPU, or AIO, I would write these numbers on one page:

Exact GPU length

Exact GPU width

Exact GPU thickness

Case maximum GPU clearance

Whether that clearance includes front fans

Radiator thickness

Fan thickness

Front mounting-bracket thickness or offset

Tube/fitting intrusion near the GPU

GPU power-cable clearance

Desired installation margin

Alternative top or side radiator location

Then calculate:

Advertised GPU clearance − actual front intrusion = remaining GPU clearance

Next:

Remaining GPU clearance − exact GPU length = installation margin

Example:

360 mm case clearance − 52 mm cooling stack = 308 mm

308 mm − 304 mm GPU = 4 mm margin

My verdict?

Too close for a build I want to assemble, clean, modify and eventually disassemble without swearing at it.

Now compare a 420 mm case:

420 − 52 = 368 mm

368 − 304 = 64 mm

Much healthier.

That is what useful GPU clearance math looks like.

FAQs

Does a front radiator reduce GPU clearance?

A front radiator can reduce GPU clearance whenever the radiator, its fans, or its mounting hardware project into the same longitudinal space reserved for the graphics card; therefore, the usable GPU length must be recalculated from the case's published maximum after accounting for the complete installed cooling stack and any nearby obstructions.

For example, a 27 mm radiator with 25 mm fans creates roughly 52 mm of cooling depth. If all 52 mm enters the GPU zone of a case rated for 360 mm, the theoretical remaining graphics card length falls to about 308 mm.

How do I calculate GPU clearance with a front radiator?

GPU clearance with a front radiator is calculated by subtracting the radiator's installed depth, fan thickness, mounting hardware and any additional front-side intrusion from the case's maximum GPU clearance, then subtracting the exact graphics-card length from that result to determine how much installation margin remains.

A practical formula is: case GPU clearance − front cooling intrusion − GPU length = remaining margin. Always confirm whether the manufacturer's original GPU specification already includes front fans or radiator hardware before subtracting anything.

Will a 360 mm GPU fit with a 360 mm front radiator?

A 360 mm graphics card will fit with a 360 mm front radiator only if the chassis provides enough simultaneous length and depth for both components; the shared “360 mm” label does not establish compatibility because radiator size describes its fan class while GPU clearance describes internal card length.

A normal 360 mm radiator may still be 27–38 mm thick and require 25 mm fans, creating a roughly 52–63 mm deep cooling assembly. Check the chassis drawing rather than matching two identical marketing numbers.

How much clearance should I leave between the GPU and front radiator?

A practical GPU-to-radiator margin is enough free space to accommodate installation tolerances, GPU end-cap geometry, radiator hardware, tube routing, airflow and future servicing; for ordinary full-size builds, I prefer roughly 10–20 mm of genuine remaining longitudinal space rather than designing the system to the manufacturer's absolute maximum.

That 10–20 mm figure is a planning preference, not a universal specification. More margin is useful with oversized partner cards, awkward installation angles, removable radiator brackets or hardware you expect to upgrade later.

Is GPU length the only measurement that matters for PC case compatibility?

GPU length is only one component of graphics-card compatibility because a successful installation also requires sufficient card width, slot thickness, power-connector space, airflow clearance, installation access and freedom from interference with radiators, fans, drive cages, brackets and other components occupying the chassis.

NVIDIA's own RTX 5090 guidance illustrates the point: beyond the card's physical dimensions, it recommends additional room for power cables and airflow. A card can therefore pass the length check while still failing the complete build.

Should I top-mount the radiator if a front radiator blocks my GPU?

A top-mounted radiator is often the cleaner alternative when a front radiator consumes too much GPU clearance, provided the radiator-and-fan stack clears the motherboard's VRM heatsinks, RAM, EPS power cable and other hardware near the top edge of the board.

Do not simply move one collision somewhere else. ACEGEEK's analysis of radiator thickness and compatibility conflicts shows why top mounting requires its own vertical-clearance calculation.

Measure the Installed Build Before You Buy the Parts

The measurement buyers miss is not GPU length.

It is what remains after the front radiator is installed.

So before buying your next PC case, stop comparing a GPU's length against the largest number in the specification table. Write down the exact radiator thickness. Add the fans. Check which side of the mounting bracket they occupy. Measure the resulting obstruction from the PCIe slot plane.

Then subtract.

If the remaining number leaves only a few millimeters around an expensive graphics card, change something now: choose a slimmer AIO, move the radiator to the top, select a shorter GPU, or choose a case with more usable GPU clearance.

Do the millimeter math before checkout.

It is considerably cheaper than discovering the answer with a screwdriver.

GPU clearance changes when a front radiator is installed. Learn how to subtract radiator and fan thickness, measure real GPU length clearance, and avoid expensive PC case compatibility mistakes.

How Much GPU Clearance Do You Really Need in a Modern PC Case?

The easy answer is to compare the graphics card length with the maximum GPU clearance printed on the PC case specification sheet.

Modern graphics cards have become long, tall, thick, power-hungry assemblies, and once front radiators, intake fans, 16-pin power cables, anti-sag brackets, vertical mounts, side panels, and airflow requirements enter the calculation, a case that supposedly supports a 360 mm GPU may become uncomfortable with a 350 mm card surprisingly fast.

So why are people still shopping as if GPU clearance were a single number?

, with a 575 W Total Graphics Power rating. NVIDIA also tells builders to provide room equivalent to a

Same GPU generation. Same RTX 5090 badge.

That difference is exactly why I do not think "supports RTX 5090" is a serious PC case specification. Give me millimeters.

The Short Answer: Aim for More Than a Technical Fit

For most modern gaming PCs, I would treat the difference between the case's usable GPU length and the graphics card's actual length like this:

Remaining Length After Installing GPUMy AssessmentBest Use0–5 mmTechnically possible, practically poorOnly tightly controlled builds5–10 mmVery tightCompact builds with verified components10–20 mmAcceptableMainstream builds without front obstructions20–30 mmComfortableRecommended starting point30–50 mmVery comfortableHigh-end triple-fan GPUs50+ mmUpgrade-friendlyFlagship and future GPU planning

planning margins, not NVIDIA, AMD, PCI-SIG, or case-manufacturer standards

. They are deliberately conservative because the advertised GPU clearance number rarely tells the whole mechanical story.

Exact GPU length + 20–30 mm is a sensible minimum target for a normal high-performance build.

And if I am buying a chassis specifically to survive another flagship-GPU upgrade, I would rather have

For a deeper look at oversized cards, ACEGEEK's

guide to choosing a PC case for large triple-fan GPUs

covers exactly why nominal fit and useful fit are different things.

GPU Length Clearance Is Only the First Measurement

Most product pages make GPU length the headline because length is easy to understand.

check requires at least four measurements:

GPU length is measured from the rear mounting bracket toward the front of the card.

But partner models can change the calculation dramatically, as the 357.6 mm ROG Astral RTX 5090 demonstrates.

GPU size compatibility must be checked against the exact model number

, not merely "RTX 5080," "RTX 5090," or "RX 7900 XTX."

Width: Where the Side Panel Starts Fighting Back

This is the dimension I think buyers underestimate most often.

A card can easily clear the front of a case while creating problems at the side panel because the cooler, PCB, and power connector extend far outward from the motherboard.

NVIDIA's RTX 5090 guidance is especially useful here. The company specifies approximately

36 mm of additional room for power cables

A 149.3 mm-wide partner card plus a stiff 16-pin connector is a very different installation problem from a 112 mm-wide mainstream graphics card using smaller connectors.

And forcing the cable against tempered glass is not my definition of compatible.

Thickness: A Four-Slot GPU Changes the Airflow Geometry

That matters for more than motherboard expansion-slot availability.

A thick graphics card moves the GPU fans closer to:

NVIDIA's own RTX 5090 case guidance recommends reserving clearance around the card equivalent to an unused expansion slot where possible to improve airflow.

A GPU cooler cannot move much air if its intake fans are breathing through a tiny gap.

The 5090 Problem Shows Why "Maximum GPU Length" Is Misleading

GPU dimensions vary far more than the GPU name suggests

guideline around a defined physical envelope: up to

304 mm long, 151 mm high including power-cable bend radius, and 50 mm or 2.5 slots thick

That framework exists because physical compatibility has become important enough to require more precise language.

And I think the mainstream ATX market should learn from it.

"Supports GPUs up to 400 mm" tells me something.

"Supports RTX 5090" tells me almost nothing.

Nominal GPU Margin = Case Maximum GPU Length − Actual GPU Length

If your case provides 400 mm of GPU clearance and your card measures 357.6 mm:

Usable GPU Margin = Published GPU Clearance − GPU Length − Front-Side Obstructions

goes deeper into this interaction, and it is worth checking whenever a front-mounted radiator shares the same longitudinal space as the GPU.

But install a 30 mm obstruction in the GPU path and suddenly only 6 mm remains.

Example 2: A 357.6 mm GPU in a 400 mm Case

You have useful room for installation, airflow, and some tolerance.

Example 3: A 357.6 mm GPU in a 360 mm Case

A 2.4 mm margin leaves almost no tolerance for manufacturing variation, installation angle, brackets, cables, fan frames, or future changes.

That is a specification-sheet victory and a builder's headache.

Front Radiators Can Destroy GPU Length Clearance

This mistake keeps appearing because buyers see:

Then they mentally combine both numbers as if those pieces occupy different dimensions.

A front-mounted radiator and its fans can consume

, depending on the exact radiator and fan combination.

If a case's published GPU-clearance specification assumes no front radiator, your 400 mm case could effectively become something closer to a 350 mm GPU environment after the cooling hardware is installed.

GPU and Radiator Clearance Math for Tight Chassis Designs

A graphics card does not care what the product page promised.

When a 304 mm GPU meets a case advertising 305 mm of GPU clearance, the specification technically says “compatible,” yet the builder still has to account for manufacturing tolerances, card insertion angle, front fans, cable covers, power-connector space, airflow, and the unpleasant possibility that removing the card later will require dismantling half the machine. Does that sound like a successful fit?

The hard truth is that GPU clearance is not one measurement. It is a three-dimensional space budget involving card length, cooler thickness, card width, power-cable projection, radiator position, fan thickness, tubing, brackets, and the direction in which each component enters the chassis.

Before choosing hardware, start with AceGeek’s guide to

choosing the right PC case for your build

. Then stop reading clearance figures as isolated promises.

GPU Clearance Is an Equation, Not a Marketing Number

The basic front-radiator calculation looks simple:

Usable GPU length = Published case clearance − radiator intrusion − fan intrusion − bracket intrusion − reserve margin

You subtract a component only when it enters the same physical axis as the graphics card. A top-mounted radiator may reduce RAM, motherboard-heatsink, or CPU-block clearance without reducing GPU length at all. A side-mounted radiator may consume card-width space, tube-routing space, or intake volume rather than card length.

That distinction separates useful PC case compatibility analysis from someone blindly subtracting 52 mm because a case supports a radiator somewhere inside it.

Runs from the rear expansion slots toward the front of the case. Front radiators, front fans, reservoirs, drive cages, and cable covers can reduce this number.

Runs from the motherboard toward the side panel. GPU width, power connectors, cable bends, vertical mounts, and side radiators compete here.

Runs across the PCIe slots toward the case floor or PSU chamber. GPU cooler thickness, bottom fans, risers, and intake gaps compete here.

Width decides whether the panel closes without crushing a cable.

covers the broader component checks. Here, I am focusing on the arithmetic that catches bad combinations before checkout.

The Millimeter Budget Builders Usually Ignore

Most standard 120 mm fans are approximately 25 mm thick. Radiators vary more than many buyers realize.

ARCTIC lists its Liquid Freezer III 360 radiator at

and states that its thicker fin stack increases cooling surface by

before brackets, screw heads, anti-vibration material, or tube fittings are considered.

A conventional 27 mm radiator with 25 mm fans consumes 52 mm. A 30 mm radiator with the same fans consumes 55 mm. A thicker 38 mm model consumes 63 mm.

Three Real Fitment Cases That Expose Bad Clearance Logic

Case 1: AceGeek Blade and an RTX 4090 Founders Edition

NVIDIA lists the GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition at

305 mm case clearance − 304 mm GPU length = 1 mm gross margin

It does not pay for sheet-metal tolerance, card angle during installation, a protruding internal fastener, vibration, front-cable routing, or the simple fact that human hands need room to release a PCIe latch.

On published length alone, the combination appears to fit. Under my standard, it fails.

And this is before discussing the 137 mm card width, the power connector, or airflow around a 450 W graphics card. NVIDIA’s installation guidance also tells builders to reserve extra room around high-end cards for airflow rather than pressing the cooler against adjacent hardware.

“Fits” is not the same as “belongs.”

Case 2: AceGeek Aquarium M345 and a 240 mm AIO

A 304 mm RTX 4090 or RTX 5090 Founders Edition produces this gross length margin:

But do not subtract a 63 mm radiator stack automatically. The Aquarium M345 mounts its radiators at the top or side, not necessarily directly in front of the GPU nose. The correct question is whether the installed radiator, fans, fittings, or tubes physically overlap the card’s length, width, or thickness envelope.

This is why photographs are not enough. You need the mounting drawing or a ruler inside the actual chassis.

A top radiator may leave all 340 mm of card length intact while colliding with tall RAM, motherboard VRM heatsinks, or an EPS cable. A side radiator may preserve GPU length but restrict fresh air reaching the card.

Case 3: AceGeek Horizon, a Side-Mounted 360 mm AIO, and an RTX 5090

NVIDIA’s current comparison data lists the RTX 5090 Founders Edition at

A side-mounted 360 mm AIO does not necessarily reduce that 106 mm length margin. Instead, it can compete with GPU width, tube-bend radius, side intake volume, fan wiring, and the space used to route a high-current PCIe Gen 5 power cable.

The Horizon has the better paper margin. It still needs a three-axis check.

And because a 575 W GPU can dump substantial heat into the case, I would prioritize the bottom intake path. Filling the side with a radiator and then blocking bottom airflow with cables would waste the chassis’s strongest thermal advantage.

Front Radiator GPU Clearance: The Honest Calculation

Imagine a chassis with a published GPU clearance of 340 mm.

Now reverse the fan placement and mount the fans outside the main chassis cavity, behind a front panel that provides sufficient depth. If the fans no longer enter the card’s length axis, the equation changes:

That is a 25 mm gain without changing the radiator.

This is why “supports a 360 mm radiator” tells me almost nothing about GPU compatibility. I need radiator location, fan location, internal rail position, fitting orientation, and actual overlap with the card.

Use these figures before buying anything:

Radiator intrusion into GPU axis: ______ mm

Fan/bracket intrusion into GPU axis: ______ mm

Remaining margin = Case clearance − all intrusions − GPU length

These are practical thresholds, not legal standards. I use them because components flex, product tolerances exist, and future upgrades rarely become smaller on command.

GPU Width and Power-Cable Space Are Safety Measurements

Builders love measuring card length because it is easy.

The power cable is where judgment disappears.

NVIDIA’s current RTX 5090 installation guidance tells users to plan

beyond the card body. That space belongs on the width axis, between the card connector and the side panel. It cannot be “borrowed” from unused length near the front of the case.

The safety record gives this issue teeth.

, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of approximately

No injuries were reported, but the lesson is ugly enough.

GPU and Radiator Clearance Math for Tight Chassis Designs

A graphics card does not care what the product page promised.

It cares about metal.

I call it mechanical debt.

The hard truth is that GPU clearance is not one measurement. It is a three-dimensional space budget involving card length, cooler thickness, card width, power-cable projection, radiator position, fan thickness, tubing, brackets, and the direction in which each component enters the chassis.

Before choosing hardware, start with AceGeek’s guide to choosing the right PC case for your build. Then stop reading clearance figures as isolated promises.

Start doing the math.

GPU Clearance Is an Equation, Not a Marketing Number

The basic front-radiator calculation looks simple:

Usable GPU length = Published case clearance − radiator intrusion − fan intrusion − bracket intrusion − reserve margin

But there is a catch.

Wrong axis, wrong answer.

That distinction separates useful PC case compatibility analysis from someone blindly subtracting 52 mm because a case supports a radiator somewhere inside it.

The Three Axes You Must Measure

Length axis: Runs from the rear expansion slots toward the front of the case. Front radiators, front fans, reservoirs, drive cages, and cable covers can reduce this number.

Width axis: Runs from the motherboard toward the side panel. GPU width, power connectors, cable bends, vertical mounts, and side radiators compete here.

Thickness axis: Runs across the PCIe slots toward the case floor or PSU chamber. GPU cooler thickness, bottom fans, risers, and intake gaps compete here.

Length decides whether the card enters.

Thickness decides whether it breathes.

Width decides whether the panel closes without crushing a cable.

AceGeek’s small-case GPU compatibility checklist covers the broader component checks. Here, I am focusing on the arithmetic that catches bad combinations before checkout.

The Millimeter Budget Builders Usually Ignore

Most standard 120 mm fans are approximately 25 mm thick. Radiators vary more than many buyers realize.

ARCTIC lists its Liquid Freezer III 360 radiator at 398 × 120 × 38 mm and states that its thicker fin stack increases cooling surface by 23% compared with its previous design. Its P12 fan is 25 mm thick. That creates a 63 mm radiator-and-fan stack before brackets, screw heads, anti-vibration material, or tube fittings are considered.

Sixty-three millimeters.

A conventional 27 mm radiator with 25 mm fans consumes 52 mm. A 30 mm radiator with the same fans consumes 55 mm. A thicker 38 mm model consumes 63 mm.

The last column is not an industry regulation. It is my pass/fail rule for a build that must be assembled, transported, cleaned, and upgraded without turning every maintenance job into surgery.

Could you run with 3 mm of spare length?

Probably.

Should you design around it?

No.

Three Real Fitment Cases That Expose Bad Clearance Logic

Case 1: AceGeek Blade and an RTX 4090 Founders Edition

The AceGeek Blade M-ATX airflow case lists:

Maximum GPU clearance: 305 mm

Case dimensions: 348 × 218 × 400 mm

CPU cooler clearance: 180 mm

Four PCIe slots

Two front 120 mm fan positions

Two top, two bottom, and one rear 120 mm fan position

NVIDIA lists the GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition at 304 mm long, 137 mm wide, three slots thick, and 450 W total graphics power on its official GeForce comparison page.

The length equation is brutal:

305 mm case clearance − 304 mm GPU length = 1 mm gross margin

One millimeter lies.

The AceGeek Aquarium M345 lists:

Maximum GPU clearance: 340 mm

Chassis dimensions: 358 × 275 × 360 mm

Top 240 mm radiator support

Side 240 mm radiator support

Two top, two side, two bottom, and one rear 120 mm fan positions

Maximum CPU cooler height: 155 mm

A 304 mm RTX 4090 or RTX 5090 Founders Edition produces this gross length margin:

340 mm − 304 mm = 36 mm

Better.

Same hardware. Different collision.

Case 3: AceGeek Horizon, a Side-Mounted 360 mm AIO, and an RTX 5090

The AceGeek Horizon three-sided glass case lists:

Maximum GPU clearance: 410 mm

Side 360 mm AIO support

Three side 120 mm fan positions

Three bottom 120 mm fan positions

One rear 120 mm fan position

Maximum CPU cooler height: 165 mm

ATX, Micro-ATX, and Mini-ITX motherboard support

NVIDIA’s current comparison data lists the RTX 5090 Founders Edition at 304 mm long, 137 mm wide, two slots, 575 W total graphics power, and a 1,000 W required system power rating for its reference configuration.

The gross length margin is generous:

410 mm − 304 mm = 106 mm

So we are finished, right?

Not quite.

You plan to install:

A 30 mm front radiator

Standard 25 mm fans

A 5 mm internal mounting bracket

A 10 mm service margin

The calculation becomes:

340 − 30 − 25 − 5 − 10 = 270 mm

Your practical GPU length limit is 270 mm, not 340 mm.

Now reverse the fan placement and mount the fans outside the main chassis cavity, behind a front panel that provides sufficient depth. If the fans no longer enter the card’s length axis, the equation changes:

340 − 30 − 5 − 10 = 295 mm

That is a 25 mm gain without changing the radiator.

This is why “supports a 360 mm radiator” tells me almost nothing about GPU compatibility. I need radiator location, fan location, internal rail position, fitting orientation, and actual overlap with the card.

My Five-Line Worksheet

Use these figures before buying anything:

Case published GPU clearance: ______ mm

Radiator intrusion into GPU axis: ______ mm

Fan/bracket intrusion into GPU axis: ______ mm

Exact GPU length: ______ mm

Remaining service margin: ______ mm

Then calculate:

Remaining margin = Case clearance − all intrusions − GPU length

My verdict:

20 mm or more: Comfortable length margin

10–19 mm: Usually workable after checking cables and airflow

5–9 mm: Risky; inspect exact mounting geometry

1–4 mm: Paper compatibility only

0 mm or less: Does not fit in that configuration

These are practical thresholds, not legal standards. I use them because components flex, product tolerances exist, and future upgrades rarely become smaller on command.

GPU Width and Power-Cable Space Are Safety Measurements

Builders love measuring card length because it is easy.

The power cable is where judgment disappears.

NVIDIA’s current RTX 5090 installation guidance tells users to plan 36 mm of additional space for power cables beyond the card body. That space belongs on the width axis, between the card connector and the side panel. It cannot be “borrowed” from unused length near the front of the case.

The safety record gives this issue teeth.

On February 8, 2024, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of approximately 25,300 CableMod 12VHPWR angled adapters. The official CPSC recall notice reported:

272 reports of adapters becoming loose, overheating, or melting into GPUs

At least $74,500 in property-damage claims

Products sold for approximately $40

A stated fire and burn hazard

Immediate stop-use instructions

No injuries were reported, but the lesson is ugly enough.

Cable clearance is not cable management.

It is electrical fitment.

I would reject any chassis combination that requires the side panel to press the GPU power cable inward, forces a sharp bend immediately beside the connector, or depends on an improvised adapter merely because the card width was ignored during planning.

How to Measure GPU Clearance Before Buying

1. Use the Exact Graphics Card SKU

Do not search only for “RTX 5090 dimensions” or “RX 7900 XTX dimensions.” Board-partner models from ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, Zotac, Sapphire, PowerColor, and PNY can use longer and thicker coolers than reference designs.

Record:

Overall card length

Overall card width

Cooler thickness in millimeters

Number of occupied slots

Power-connector location

Required connector type

Recommended power supply

The GPU chip name is not the physical product.

2. Draw the Cooling Layout Before Ordering It

Place the radiator on paper first.

Front, top, side, bottom, and rear mounts create different collisions. The AceGeek Aqua360 360 mm AIO, for example, should be matched against the case’s specific radiator position rather than treated as a generic “360 mm cooler.”

Write down the complete stack:

Radiator + fans + bracket + gasket + screw-head allowance

Do not use radiator thickness alone.

3. Measure the Narrowest Point

The widest-looking part of the case is often irrelevant.

Cable covers, folded sheet-metal lips, front-panel connectors, fan rails, reservoirs, drive cages, and internal decorative panels may create a narrower path near the GPU nose.

The card must pass through the installation opening and occupy the final position. Those are sometimes different measurements.

4. Check GPU Thickness Against Intake Space

A nominal three-slot card can sit extremely close to bottom fans, a PSU shroud, or a glass panel.

I want a visible intake gap.

The card may physically install with 2 mm below its cooler, but the fans will be fighting a high-resistance inlet. Temperatures rise. Fan speed rises. Noise follows.

Small form factor PC cases are not automatically bad. They are simply less forgiving.

5. Simulate Removal

Can you reach the PCIe latch?

Can you remove the card without pulling the radiator?

Can the power connector be released without levering it against the side panel?

Can the front fans be replaced without draining a custom loop?

Serviceability is part of compatibility. A computer is not a sealed sculpture.

The Fitment Rules I Refuse to Break

I do not approve a tight chassis design unless it passes all five tests:

Positive length margin: The installed GPU remains shorter than the usable clearance after every real intrusion is subtracted.

Relaxed power routing: The connector seats fully and the cable reaches the side panel without being crushed or sharply folded at the plug.

Open intake area: The GPU cooler has enough space to draw air without sitting directly against fans, glass, or a PSU chamber.

Accessible maintenance: The GPU, radiator fans, and power cable can be removed without dismantling unrelated hardware.

Upgrade allowance: The build retains at least some room for a future card, thicker cable, or revised cooling layout.

Barely compatible?

Then it is not compatible enough.

The industry tends to reward the smallest-looking case that can display the largest-looking GPU. I prefer the chassis that lets the hardware run, breathe, and come apart without swearing.

FAQs

How do I calculate GPU clearance with a front radiator?

GPU clearance with a front radiator is the case’s published maximum card length minus every item that physically enters the graphics card’s length axis, including radiator thickness, fan thickness, mounting rails, reservoirs, cable covers, and a practical service margin of at least 10 mm.

For example, a 340 mm case with a 30 mm radiator, 25 mm fans, a 5 mm bracket, and a 10 mm reserve has a practical card-length limit of 270 mm. Use the assembled stack thickness, not the radiator specification alone.

Will my GPU fit with a front radiator?

A GPU fits with a front radiator only when its exact length is shorter than the chassis’s remaining length after the complete radiator-and-fan stack, brackets, reservoirs, and reserve margin are subtracted, while its width, slot thickness, power connector, and airflow path also clear the assembled case.

Do not rely on the case’s original maximum GPU figure. That number may describe an empty front mount. Confirm whether fans sit inside or outside the card chamber and whether the radiator fittings overlap the GPU nose.

How much extra GPU clearance should I leave?

Extra GPU clearance is the unused physical space remaining after the card, cooling hardware, brackets, and other obstructions are installed; I recommend at least 10 mm of length margin for normal assembly, while 20 mm or more provides a safer allowance for tolerances, maintenance, vibration, and future upgrades.

Length margin does not replace side-panel cable clearance. A card can have 40 mm free at its nose and still fail because its power connector is pressed against the glass.

Does a top-mounted radiator reduce GPU clearance?

A top-mounted radiator usually does not reduce GPU length because it occupies the vertical area above the motherboard, but it can reduce clearance for RAM, motherboard VRM heatsinks, EPS power cables, radiator fittings, and tall pump components when the radiator-and-fan stack extends too far downward.

Measure the distance between the top mounting rail and the highest motherboard component. A 38 mm radiator with 25 mm fans creates a 63 mm stack, which can become the deciding number even when the GPU length remains unchanged.

Is GPU length the only measurement needed for PC case compatibility?

GPU length is only one part of PC case compatibility; builders must also verify card width, cooler thickness, occupied PCIe slots, side-panel power-cable space, intake clearance, radiator overlap, riser position, PSU cabling, and whether the card can be inserted, secured, powered, cooled, and later removed.

A 304 mm card may fit a 340 mm chassis and still be unusable because it blocks bottom fans, presses its connector against the side panel, or collides with a side radiator.

Calculate Before You Commit

Open the exact case specification. Open the exact GPU specification. Add the complete radiator-and-fan stack.

Then calculate all three axes.

Use AceGeek’s PC case range to compare published GPU, radiator, fan, and motherboard support, but treat those figures as the beginning of the decision—not the verdict.

Write down the numbers before placing the order. Reject combinations with forced cables, blocked intakes, or single-digit millimeter margins. And when two cases both hold the same hardware, choose the one that leaves room for air, hands, and the next upgrade.

Measure twice.

Build once.
