AIO Radiator Length Is Longer Than “360mm”: Here Is Why

When a manufacturer advertises a 360mm AIO liquid cooler, that number describes the nominal mounting layout for three 120mm fans, not the complete radiator housing, which also includes coolant end tanks, structural framing, and tube connections.

So why do so many PC builders still assume a 360mm radiator measures exactly 360mm?

The NZXT Kraken 360 (2023) has a radiator measuring 394mm long. The ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 360 measures 398mm. And the NZXT Kraken Elite 360 (2024) stretches to 401mm.

That's up to 41mm longer than the nominal 360mm designation among these examples.

For someone building inside a spacious full-tower chassis, the difference might not cause any problems.

For someone installing a radiator beneath a tight case roof, next to a motherboard heatsink, or behind a long graphics card, it can determine whether the cooler fits at all.

I think this is one of the least clearly explained details in AIO cooler specifications. The industry uses radiator-size categories because they're convenient for shopping, but those categories don't tell buyers the complete installation dimensions.

Here's what the 360mm label actually means, why the radiator is longer, and how to check compatibility before purchasing.

Why Is a 360mm AIO Radiator Longer Than 360mm?

A 360mm AIO radiator is longer than 360mm because its nominal size represents three 120mm fan positions, while its overall physical length includes additional components required for coolant circulation and structural support.

The arithmetic behind the name is straightforward:

But those three fans are only part of the cooling assembly.

A liquid cooling radiator must also circulate coolant through internal channels, transfer heat through metal fins, and provide sealed connections between the radiator and the rest of the cooling loop.

That requires more space than the fan row alone.

Every conventional AIO radiator contains coolant chambers called end tanks.

These chambers are located at the ends of the radiator core and help distribute or collect liquid traveling through the internal cooling channels.

One end commonly accommodates the tube connections, while the internal radiator design determines how coolant travels through the heat exchanger.

The important part is that these chambers extend beyond the nominal fan footprint.

Their size varies depending on the radiator's internal construction.

Some manufacturers use longer tanks. Others use more compact designs.

That's why two 360mm AIO coolers can have different overall lengths even when both support the same three-fan configuration.

The radiator is not simply a collection of fins and pipes.

Its housing must hold the assembly together and provide mounting points for the fans and chassis.

Differences in tank construction, framing, and fitting placement affect the finished dimensions.

Even when the radiator body fits inside the case, the tubing may need additional space to leave the end tank without making an excessively tight bend.

And this is the distinction worth remembering:

A 360mm fan layout, a 400mm radiator body, and the clearance required to install that radiator are three different measurements.

Understanding that difference is the first step toward choosing compatible hardware.

Actual 360mm AIO Radiator Dimensions: What Manufacturers Really Specify

Let's replace assumptions with verified numbers.

Official specifications from NZXT and ARCTIC reveal how much variation exists within the 360mm AIO category.

NZXT Kraken 360 (2023): 394mm Actual Length

That makes it 34mm longer than the nominal 360mm fan layout.

At 121mm, this radiator is slightly wider than the standard 120mm fan frame.

In most roomy cases, that additional millimeter will not matter.

But when mounting rails sit close to large motherboard heatsinks or other structural components, small dimensional differences become relevant.

NZXT Kraken Core 360 (2025): 397mm Actual Length

NZXT Kraken Core 2025 specification sheet

This radiator is 37mm longer than its nominal designation.

That difference illustrates why a radiator's overall length cannot be used to predict its thickness or cooling performance.

Every dimension must be evaluated separately.

ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 360: 398mm Actual Length

official Liquid Freezer II 360 specifications

But the radiator's thickness creates another potential installation problem.

At 38mm thick, it occupies considerably more depth than the 27mm NZXT Kraken Core radiator.

Using a hypothetical 25mm fan layer, the ARCTIC assembly would occupy 63mm before additional allowances.

A 27mm radiator with the same fans would occupy only 52mm.

When mounting a radiator above tall DDR5 memory modules or motherboard VRM heatsinks, those 11mm can be more troublesome than the extra length.

why radiator thickness breaks otherwise compatible PC builds

NZXT Kraken Elite 360 (2024): 401mm Actual Length

That's 41mm beyond the nominal 360mm size.

In percentage terms, the radiator body is approximately 11.4% longer than the nominal fan row.

The Kraken Elite is longer than the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 360, but its radiator is considerably thinner.

A longer housing does not automatically mean a larger active cooling surface or better thermal performance.

Some of that physical length belongs to components that are necessary for coolant circulation rather than direct heat exchange.

I would never choose between these coolers based on length alone.

Why a 360mm-Compatible PC Case Might Still Reject Your Radiator

Here's where the difference becomes a real installation issue.

A case specification stating "360mm radiator support" usually means the chassis provides a mounting location intended for that radiator class.

It does not automatically mean every 360mm cooler will fit in every hardware configuration.

The Fractal Design Summit provides a particularly useful real-world example.

Case Study: Fractal Design Summit and a 401mm Radiator

Fractal Design's official Summit radiator support documentation

, updated September 2, 2026, the case supports top-mounted 360mm radiators with the following limits:

Now consider the NZXT Kraken Elite 360 (2024).

404mm − 401mm = 3mm of remaining length clearance.

The published dimensions indicate that its radiator body falls within the top mounting position's length limit.

But three millimeters is not much additional space.

More importantly, the Summit's specifications change when multiple radiators are installed simultaneously.

For its supported combination of top, front, and rear radiators, Fractal recommends a maximum top radiator length of 398mm.

A 401mm radiator exceeds that recommendation by 3mm.

Only the installation configuration has changed.

That is the kind of detail a basic compatibility label cannot communicate.

Why Length Isn't the Only Compatibility Problem

A complete radiator installation involves several interacting dimensions.

AIO Radiator Length Is Longer Than “360mm”: Here Is Why

The label misleads.

Look at the official specifications.

The NZXT Kraken 360 (2023) has a radiator measuring 394mm long. The ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 360 measures 398mm. And the NZXT Kraken Elite 360 (2024) stretches to 401mm.

120mm + 120mm + 120mm = 360mm.

But those three fans are only part of the cooling assembly.

A liquid cooling radiator must also circulate coolant through internal channels, transfer heat through metal fins, and provide sealed connections between the radiator and the rest of the cooling loop.

That requires more space than the fan row alone.

Radiator End Tanks Are the Main Reason

Every conventional AIO radiator contains coolant chambers called end tanks.

These chambers are located at the ends of the radiator core and help distribute or collect liquid traveling through the internal cooling channels.

One end commonly accommodates the tube connections, while the internal radiator design determines how coolant travels through the heat exchanger.

Their size varies depending on the radiator's internal construction.

Some manufacturers use longer tanks. Others use more compact designs.

That's why two 360mm AIO coolers can have different overall lengths even when both support the same three-fan configuration.

Structural Housing Adds Another Variable

The radiator is not simply a collection of fins and pipes.

Its housing must hold the assembly together and provide mounting points for the fans and chassis.

Differences in tank construction, framing, and fitting placement affect the finished dimensions.

Tube routing adds another complication.

Even when the radiator body fits inside the case, the tubing may need additional space to leave the end tank without making an excessively tight bend.

And this is the distinction worth remembering:

A 360mm fan layout, a 400mm radiator body, and the clearance required to install that radiator are three different measurements.

Actual 360mm AIO Radiator Dimensions: What Manufacturers Really Specify

Let's replace assumptions with verified numbers.

Official specifications from NZXT and ARCTIC reveal how much variation exists within the 360mm AIO category.

NZXT Kraken 360 (2023): 394mm Actual Length

According to the official NZXT Kraken 2023 specifications, the Kraken 360 radiator measures:

Length: 394mm

Width: 121mm

Thickness: 30mm

That makes it 34mm longer than the nominal 360mm fan layout.

The width is worth noticing, too.

The NZXT Kraken Core 2025 specification sheet lists the radiator dimensions as:

Length: 397mm

Width: 120mm

Thickness: 27mm

This radiator is 37mm longer than its nominal designation.

Compare it with the earlier Kraken 360.

The Core is 3mm longer but 3mm thinner.

That difference illustrates why a radiator's overall length cannot be used to predict its thickness or cooling performance.

Every dimension must be evaluated separately.

ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 360: 398mm Actual Length

ARCTIC takes the comparison further.

Its official Liquid Freezer II 360 specifications show:

Length: 398mm

Width: 120mm

Thickness: 38mm

The extra length is 38mm.

That's an 11mm difference.

When mounting a radiator above tall DDR5 memory modules or motherboard VRM heatsinks, those 11mm can be more troublesome than the extra length.

For a deeper explanation, read ACEGEEK's guide on why radiator thickness breaks otherwise compatible PC builds.

NZXT Kraken Elite 360 (2024): 401mm Actual Length

The NZXT Kraken Elite 2024 specifications list the 360mm radiator at:

Length: 401mm

Width: 120mm

Thickness: 27mm

That's 41mm beyond the nominal 360mm size.

In percentage terms, the radiator body is approximately 11.4% longer than the nominal fan row.

Notice something interesting.

The Fractal Design Summit provides a particularly useful real-world example.

Case Study: Fractal Design Summit and a 401mm Radiator

According to Fractal Design's official Summit radiator support documentation, updated September 2, 2026, the case supports top-mounted 360mm radiators with the following limits:

Maximum radiator length: 404mm

Maximum radiator width: 135mm

Maximum total thickness, including fans: 63mm

Now consider the NZXT Kraken Elite 360 (2024).

Its radiator body is 401mm long.

That leaves:

404mm − 401mm = 3mm of remaining length clearance.

The published dimensions indicate that its radiator body falls within the top mounting position's length limit.

But three millimeters is not much additional space.

A 401mm radiator exceeds that recommendation by 3mm.

The cooler hasn't changed.

The case hasn't changed.

Only the installation configuration has changed.

That is the kind of detail a basic compatibility label cannot communicate.

Why Length Isn't the Only Compatibility Problem

A complete radiator installation involves several interacting dimensions.

Radiator length determines whether the housing fits between the mounting area's physical boundaries.

Radiator width affects clearance around mounting brackets and adjacent motherboard components.

Radiator thickness determines how far the heat exchanger extends into the chassis.

Fan thickness adds additional depth.

Tube routing determines whether coolant hoses can reach the CPU block without excessive bending or component interference.

If any one of these conflicts with another component, the installation may fail.

This is particularly important for top-mounted AIO coolers.

ACEGEEK's article on top-radiator clearance, RAM, tubing, and motherboard space examines the physical conflicts that can occur even when the radiator's nominal size is supported.

How to Measure a 360mm AIO Radiator Correctly

Before purchasing a 360mm liquid cooler, I recommend performing a basic dimensional compatibility check.

It doesn't require specialized equipment.

You need the manufacturer's specifications, the case's mounting restrictions, and an understanding of where the components will sit.

Step 1: Measure the Complete Radiator Length

Start with the radiator body itself.

Measure from the outermost end of one radiator tank to the opposite end.

Do not measure only the finned section.

And don't stop at the three-fan footprint.

If you're checking specifications online, look for the dimension labeled "radiator length" or the complete length-by-width-by-thickness measurement.

For example, if your radiator measures 398mm long, your chosen mounting position must accommodate that full length.

Also inspect the tube fittings to determine whether they require additional space beyond the housing.

Step 2: Calculate the Radiator and Fan Stack

Radiator thickness alone doesn't describe the complete installed depth.

The basic formula is:

Total installed stack depth = radiator thickness + fan thickness

Consider three examples using 25mm-thick fans:

A 27mm radiator creates a 52mm stack.

A 30mm radiator creates a 55mm stack.

A 38mm radiator creates a 63mm stack.

These are illustrative calculations. Actual fans may have different thicknesses, including 26mm or 30mm.

If you use fans on both sides of the radiator in a push-pull configuration, include both layers.

Additional space may be required for mounting hardware, fittings, and nearby components.

Step 3: Check the Exact Mounting Position

Not all radiator positions inside a case provide the same clearance.

For a top-mounted radiator, inspect the motherboard's upper edge, RAM modules, VRM heatsinks, rear exhaust fan, and CPU power connectors.

For a front-mounted radiator, check the front chassis frame, drive cages, PSU shroud, and graphics card.

For a side-mounted radiator, check motherboard offset, cable routing, and available space between the radiator and other internal hardware.

Don't assume that a case supporting a 360mm radiator at one position supports it at every position.

For example, the ACEGEEK LunarisFlow PC case lists top-mounted 360mm and 420mm AIO support, while its side radiator support is listed at 240mm.

That is an important distinction when planning a build.

And while the LunarisFlow's specifications also list 400mm maximum GPU clearance, that figure should not be mistaken for its maximum radiator length.

They describe different physical constraints.

Step 4: Calculate Available Length Clearance

Use a simple formula:

Available clearance − actual radiator length = remaining space

Suppose your case provides 405mm of unobstructed mounting length.

Your radiator measures 398mm.

That leaves 7mm of length clearance.

The radiator may fit, provided the mounting holes align and the tubing, brackets, and neighboring components do not interfere.

I prefer having roughly 5–10mm of spare space where practical.

That is a conservative planning preference, not an official universal installation requirement.

A case manufacturer's supported dimensions and the complete mechanical layout remain the deciding factors.

Step 5: Verify Tube Routing Before Final Installation

Even a radiator that physically fits inside its mounting area can be difficult to install if the tubing has insufficient space.

The tubes need to reach the CPU block naturally.

Avoid forcing them into sharp bends or pressing them tightly against fan frames, metal edges, or motherboard components.

Follow the AIO manufacturer's mounting-orientation guidance as well.

Air within a sealed liquid cooling loop can affect pump noise and operation depending on where it accumulates.

The goal isn't merely to fit the radiator into the case.

It's to install a complete cooling system that can operate and be serviced without unnecessary mechanical stress.

Does a Longer 360mm Radiator Provide Better Cooling?

Not automatically.

This is another misconception worth correcting.

A 401mm radiator does not necessarily outperform a 394mm radiator.

The difference might come from longer coolant tanks, different fittings, or structural housing rather than additional finned cooling surface.

Thermal performance depends on multiple factors:

The radiator's active heat-exchange area.

Internal coolant-channel design.

Radiator thickness and fin density.

Fan airflow and static pressure.

Pump performance and coolant flow.

CPU heat output.

Ambient temperature and case airflow.

A physically larger radiator can offer additional cooling capacity, but the overall external length is not a reliable performance benchmark by itself.

Is a 360mm AIO Always Better Than a 240mm AIO?

A 360mm AIO generally offers more potential heat-exchange area than a comparable 240mm model.

That can provide additional thermal headroom under sustained CPU workloads.

But larger isn't always the smarter choice.

A well-designed 240mm AIO may be sufficient for a gaming system with moderate CPU power consumption.

It may also offer better compatibility in a compact chassis, reduce installation complexity, and leave more room for other components.

On the other hand, high-power processors used for sustained rendering, compiling, or intensive workstation tasks may benefit from a larger radiator.

The right answer depends on the processor, workload, acoustics, and chassis geometry.

Read ACEGEEK's comparison of when a 240mm AIO is better than a 360mm AIO for more guidance.

I would rather use a properly installed 240mm cooler than force a 360mm radiator into a mounting position with questionable clearance.

FAQs

Why is a 360mm AIO radiator longer than 360mm?

A 360mm AIO radiator is longer than 360mm because the nominal measurement describes the mounting layout for three 120mm fans, not the complete radiator housing. Coolant end tanks, structural framing, and tube connections extend beyond the fan row, increasing the radiator's total physical length.

The additional length is part of normal radiator construction, not necessarily a manufacturing defect.

What is the actual length of a 360mm AIO radiator?

The actual length of a 360mm AIO radiator is the complete end-to-end measurement of its housing, including the radiator end tanks rather than just the fan mounting area. Published specifications for representative NZXT and ARCTIC 360mm models show actual lengths ranging from 394mm to 401mm.

These examples do not establish a universal minimum or maximum. Always check the exact model's specification sheet.

Will any 360mm AIO fit a case that supports 360mm radiators?

A case supporting 360mm radiators provides a mounting position designed for that nominal cooling size, but it does not guarantee compatibility with every radiator model. The complete installation must also satisfy the case's limits for radiator length, width, thickness, fan depth, tube routing, and nearby components.

Always compare the cooler's actual measurements with the specific mounting position's restrictions.

How do I measure a 360mm AIO radiator?

Measuring a 360mm AIO radiator means determining the complete length, width, and thickness of the radiator housing, including its end tanks, rather than measuring only the three-fan footprint. You must also account for installed fan thickness, protruding fittings, and the space needed for safe tube routing.

A manufacturer's detailed dimensional drawing is the best starting point.

Do AIO radiator end tanks affect cooling performance?

AIO radiator end tanks are coolant chambers that distribute and collect liquid flowing through the radiator's internal cooling channels. Their dimensions affect the radiator's overall length, but a longer tank does not automatically create more active finned cooling area or guarantee better thermal performance.

Cooling efficiency depends on the complete radiator design, fans, pump, and operating conditions.

Does a 360mm AIO radiator need 400mm of case clearance?

The required clearance for a 360mm AIO radiator depends on its actual housing dimensions and the case's mounting geometry rather than a universal 400mm requirement. Some 360mm radiators measure less than 400mm, while others exceed it, and tube fittings may require additional space beyond the radiator body.

Use the exact cooler dimensions rather than assuming 400mm is always sufficient.

Final Thoughts: Check the Real Dimensions Before You Buy

The most important takeaway is simple.

A 360mm AIO radiator is not necessarily 360mm long.

The number describes its nominal three-fan configuration.

The actual radiator includes end tanks, a structural housing, and connection hardware that make the complete assembly longer.

The manufacturer data confirms it.

NZXT's Kraken 360 (2023) measures 394mm. ARCTIC's Liquid Freezer II 360 measures 398mm. NZXT's Kraken Elite 360 (2024) measures 401mm.

And as the Fractal Design Summit example demonstrates, even a few millimeters can affect whether an installation meets the manufacturer's clearance recommendations.

Before buying your next AIO, take three steps:

Find the radiator's exact dimensions. Check its actual length, width, and thickness rather than relying on the 360mm product name.

Calculate the complete installation footprint. Include fans, fittings, and tube-routing requirements.

Verify your PC case's mounting restrictions. Check the intended radiator position and the clearance around your motherboard, RAM, GPU, and other components.

If you're planning a liquid-cooled PC build, explore the ACEGEEK Cryoscreen 360 liquid cooler and compare your preferred cooler's full dimensions against your chassis.

You can also browse the ACEGEEK PC case collection to find a case with an appropriate radiator mounting configuration.

Don't choose a cooler based on the 360mm label alone.

Measure the actual radiator. Check the mounting space. Confirm the complete assembly fits.

A few minutes spent checking dimensions can prevent an expensive compatibility mistake.

A 360mm AIO radiator rarely measures exactly 360mm. Real models from NZXT and ARCTIC reach 394–401mm because their end tanks and structural housings extend beyond the three-fan layout. Here's how to understand the difference and avoid PC case clearance problems.
