Why a GPU Can Fit on Paper but Fail During Installation

A graphics card can pass every number on the spec sheet and still fail on build day. The case lists 400 mm of GPU clearance, the card is 350 mm long, and the comparison looks settled. Then a front radiator takes space the listing never counted, the 16-pin power cable presses against the glass, or the cooler's fans end up a few millimeters from the PSU shroud. For system integrators, PC brands, distributors, and procurement teams, these failures mean rework, delayed shipments, and avoidable returns. This article explains why a paper fit and an installed fit are different tests, which measurements decide the outcome, and what to verify before approving a case for a specific GPU.

Why Does a GPU That Fits on Paper Fail During Installation?

A GPU fails during installation when the case's published maximum GPU length is treated as a complete compatibility test.

That figure is one measurement, taken under a configuration the manufacturer defines. Installation also depends on card height toward the side panel, card thickness, other hardware sharing the same space, the path the card travels to reach its slot, and manufacturing tolerance.

NVIDIA's own guidance shows how much larger the real envelope can be than the headline length. Its

lists the Founders Edition as a 2-slot card, 304 mm long and 137 mm wide. The same page asks builders to provide room for a 3-slot (61 mm) card and to plan an additional 36 mm for power cables. It also states that card specifications vary by add-in-card manufacturer. A single length figure cannot carry that much information.

For a full set of measurements, ACEGEEK's guide to

GPU clearance across length, height, and thickness

is a useful companion. The sections below focus on the specific places where a paper fit breaks.

1. The Published Length Assumes a Configuration You May Not Use

Case makers do not all measure GPU length the same way. One figure may assume an empty front mounting area. Another may include factory-installed front fans. A third may change if a drive cage is removed. If the listing does not state its conditions, the number cannot be applied to your build without confirmation from the manual, a drawing, or the supplier.

2. Front Radiators and Fans Take Length, but Not Always All of It

A 360 mm AIO radiator is named for the fans it holds, not for its thickness. Radiator thickness varies between models, and fans add their own depth. The amount to subtract from the case's GPU length is the

obstruction your configuration creates compared with the configuration behind the published figure. Subtracting the full radiator-and-fan stack when the fans were already counted double-counts them. Skipping the subtraction when the stack sits entirely in the GPU's path overstates clearance. ACEGEEK's article on

3. Width: The Side Panel and the Power Cable

Card height, the connector position, and cable bend room all sit on the axis between the motherboard and the side panel. Unused length at the front of the case cannot compensate for a connector that touches the glass. This is the most common reason a card that passes the length check still blocks the panel from closing. ACEGEEK's

explains how to size that gap for horizontal and vertical layouts.

4. Thickness: Slots, Bottom Fans, and the PSU Shroud

Modern flagship coolers can occupy three or more slot positions. A thick cooler may press against bottom fans, a PSU shroud, a neighboring card, or an anti-sag bracket. NVIDIA's page says that reserving clearance equal to an unused expansion slot will typically improve airflow, which suggests that thickness has a cooling dimension as well as a mechanical one. For thick, long cards, ACEGEEK's article on

choosing a PC case for large triple-fan GPUs

5. The Installation Path Is Not the Final Position

A card has to enter the case, tilt into the slot, and seat against the rear bracket. A frame lip, cable cover, fan rail, or radiator end tank can block that route even when the final position is clear. A gap of a millimeter or two may satisfy arithmetic and still leave no room to insert the card, release the PCIe latch, or remove the card later during service.

6. Orientation Changes the Thermal Result

Vertical mounting moves the cooler's intake face toward the side panel.

GamersNexus tested this in a Cooler Master H500M

: the GPU core was 44°C over ambient with the card horizontal and with CableMod's inward-offset vertical mount, and 50°C over ambient with the case's stock vertical mount. That is one case and one older card, so it shows direction, not a threshold. A "supports vertical GPU" line in a specification does not tell you where the card ends up relative to the glass. See ACEGEEK's piece on

A Worked Example: One Card, One Case, Three Different Outcomes

The following numbers are hypothetical and chosen to show the arithmetic, not to describe any product. A case lists 380 mm of maximum GPU length. The card is 345 mm long. Compare the length margin under three front-cooling assumptions:

ScenarioAdditional intrusion into GPU lengthUsable GPU lengthMargin for a 345 mm cardA. Published figure assumes an empty front mount; a 27 mm radiator and 25 mm fans sit fully inside52 mm328 mm−17 mm (does not fit)B. Published figure already includes 25 mm fans; the radiator adds 27 mm27 mm353 mm8 mmC. Fans mount outside the main chamber; only 15 mm of the radiator intrudes15 mm365 mm20 mm

The same case and the same card produce a 37 mm swing. Which scenario applies depends entirely on how the case's number was measured and where the cooling parts physically sit. ACEGEEK's

extends this approach to brackets and reserve margins.

Does More Length Margin Make the Installation Safe?

Only along one axis. A large length margin is useful, but it is not a general safety factor. Forty millimeters of spare length does not give a connector extra room at the side panel, and it does not widen the gap beneath a thick cooler.

Margin also has a cost. A chassis with more internal room is typically larger, and a larger carton affects freight volume and storage, so specifying more clearance than a product line needs is a commercial trade-off, not a free precaution. Published planning rules of thumb vary between sources, and none of them is an industry standard. The more defensible approach is to set an internal margin rule for assembly, service, and tolerance, then confirm it on a physical sample with the largest card the product line will support. That rule works for the product family it was tested on and should be re-checked when a new GPU generation changes the card envelope.

Cable Clearance Is a Safety Check, Not a Cosmetic One

Power-cable room belongs to the width axis and cannot be borrowed from length. NVIDIA's 36 mm figure applies to the RTX 5090 Founders Edition and is a vendor planning allowance, not a universal case specification. Follow the current instructions from the GPU, PSU, and cable manufacturers for the connector you are using.

Do not use an improvised adapter to solve a tight-panel problem. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's

recall notice for CableMod angled GPU adapters

covers about 25,300 units. The firm had received 272 reports of adapters becoming loose, overheating, and melting into the GPU, with at least $74,500 in property-damage claims in the United States and no reported injuries. The recall concerns that specific product, not every angled connector, and it does not show that tight panels caused those failures. It does show why a connector solution should be approved by the relevant vendors rather than discovered during assembly.

What Should Buyers Specify Before Requesting a Quote?

When sourcing cases from a manufacturer or comparing OEM/ODM options, send the supplier a compatibility brief instead of a single GPU length. A complete request makes the answer verifiable.

Ask the supplier to confirm each figure on a production sample. Dimensions from renders or similar models should not be assumed to carry over.

Why does my GPU fit by length but the side panel will not close?

Length and width are separate axes. The panel can be blocked by card height, connector position, or cable bend room. Extra length margin cannot compensate, so check slot-plane-to-panel distance against the exact card and cable.

Do front fans and radiators always reduce GPU clearance?

No. They reduce usable length only where they overlap the GPU's path beyond what the published figure already includes. Check whether the listing assumes empty mounts or installed fans, then subtract only the additional intrusion.

How much spare GPU length should I leave?

No industry standard exists. Published rules of thumb differ, and the right figure depends on tolerance, installation access, and service needs. Set an internal margin and confirm it on a physical sample with the largest card you plan to support.

Is the GPU model name enough to check compatibility?

No. Board partners build cards on the same GPU with different coolers, lengths, and thicknesses. NVIDIA notes that card specifications vary by add-in-card manufacturer. Use the exact product model's dimensions and connector position.

Yes. Mechanical fit does not guarantee airflow. A cooler close to glass, a shroud, or bottom fans may receive restricted intake. One GamersNexus test showed a vertical mount near glass running 6°C hotter than the other layouts.

What should an integrator ask a case supplier before ordering GPU-heavy builds?

Ask how GPU clearance was measured, what changes with a front radiator, what the side-panel distance is, and whether a production sample and internal drawings are available for testing with your target GPUs.

Six Places Where a Paper Fit Breaks

How to Verify a Fit Before You Order

Record the exact GPU model. Use the board partner's product page for length, height, thickness, slot count, and connector position. A GPU chip name is not a dimension set.

Read the case's measurement conditions. Find whether the published length assumes empty mounts, installed fans, or a specific drive-cage setup. If it is not stated, ask.

List everything sharing the GPU's space. Include the radiator, fans, brackets, fittings, tubing, drive cages, and any anti-sag support.

Calculate along each axis separately. Length, width, and thickness each need their own margin. Do not merge them into one subtraction.

Check the insertion path. A dry fit or CAD review should show the card can enter, seat, and be removed without disassembling unrelated parts.

Test the worst-case configuration. Run the longest, thickest, highest-power card you intend to support with the side panel closed, and log temperature, clocks, and noise.

What Should Buyers Specify Before Requesting a Quote?

When sourcing cases from a manufacturer or comparing OEM/ODM options, send the supplier a compatibility brief instead of a single GPU length. A complete request makes the answer verifiable.

Target GPU list: exact board models with length, height, thickness, slot count, and connector type.

Cooling configuration: radiator size and thickness, fan depth, mounting position, and whether push-pull is planned.

Panel and orientation requirements: horizontal, vertical, or both; glass, mesh, or solid panels; and the required distance from slot plane to panel.

Cable plan: PSU cable type, connector style, and bend-room requirements.

Support hardware: anti-sag brackets, riser cables, and vertical-mount kits.

Validation expectations: a production sample, internal drawings, and panel-on thermal testing with named GPUs.

Order and delivery details: quantity, target market, schedule, and packaging requirements.

Ask the supplier to confirm each figure on a production sample. Dimensions from renders or similar models should not be assumed to carry over.

Can an ATX Case Fit an E-ATX Motherboard Safely?

Usually, no. A case sold as ATX is designed around a board that measures 305 × 244 mm, and an E-ATX board is wider. Some narrower E-ATX boards may physically sit inside an ATX chassis, but "it sits inside" is a different test from "it is mechanically supported and serviceable." The extra board width can land on mounting positions that have no standoffs, block cable cutouts, or collide with drive cages, fans, and radiators.

For system builders, IT buyers specifying workstation hardware, and enthusiasts ordering a high-end platform, the real question is whether the board is supported at every mounting point. The other half is whether every connector can be reached and plugged in without stress. This guide explains what E-ATX actually means, where forced fits fail, and which checks to run before you order.

Short Answer: When Is an ATX Case Safe for an E-ATX Motherboard?

An ATX case is safe for an E-ATX motherboard only when the case manufacturer lists support for that board's width, or confirms your exact board model. If the case specification says ATX, micro-ATX, and mini-ITX only, treat an E-ATX board as unsupported.

Three conditions must all be true for a safe installation:

A case that satisfies only the first condition on paper can still fail the third in practice. That is why the sections below break the fit into separate checks.

Why "E-ATX" Does Not Describe a Single Board Size

E-ATX is not a strict consumer standard.

Corsair's explanation of SSI-EEB and CEB boards

describes the SSI-EEB server size as 305 × 330 mm. It also notes that consumer "E-ATX" varies in size and hole pattern by brand, so E-ATX support should not be read as SSI-EEB support. Standard ATX is 305 × 244 mm.

The extra dimension is the one that runs from the rear I/O panel toward the front of the case. On the boards listed below, the 305 mm dimension stays the same, so the rear expansion slots keep their usual positions. What changes is how far the board reaches toward the cable cutouts and front-mounted hardware.

Published widths show how much variation sits behind one label. The

lists several current boards that carry the E-ATX label. The extra width over ATX works out as follows:

E-ATX board (as listed in the ACEGEEK guide)Listed sizeExtra width vs. ATX (244 mm)ASRock X870E Taichi305 × 267 mm23 mmASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Extreme305 × 277 mm33 mmMSI MEG X870E GODLIKE305 × 310 mm66 mmSSI-EEB reference size305 × 330 mm86 mm

Those differences matter. A 23 mm overhang and an 86 mm overhang are different mechanical problems. "E-ATX is too big for ATX" is correct in direction but too blunt for a purchasing decision. The board widths in the table come from the ACEGEEK guide and the SSI size from Corsair. Confirm your own board's dimensions in its manual or on the manufacturer's specification page.

What Goes Wrong When an E-ATX Board Is Forced Into an ATX Case?

Standoffs raise the board off the tray so the solder points on its underside do not touch metal.

Wikipedia's entry on computer case screws

describes the standoff as providing a margin of space that prevents grounding and short circuits. The tray in an ATX case is drilled for ATX-sized boards.

uses an ATX board with nine screw holes as its example. It tells users to install only the standoffs that match the board's holes, because unmatched standoffs touching the back of the PCB can damage it.

An E-ATX board has additional holes along its wider edge. In an ATX case, nothing is there to receive them. The board then hangs unsupported along the edge where you push in the 24-pin connector, seat RAM, and plug in headers. In a thread on

using an old ATX case for an E-ATX motherboard

, forum members suggested it might work if nothing pressed on the unsupported edge. That was one community discussion, not a tested standard. Flexing a board during connector insertion is a poor way to find out.

Overhang across cable cutouts and front-edge connectors

On an ATX-width tray, the cable cutouts sit just beyond the board's front edge. A wider board can cover them. The 24-pin cable then has no clean path behind the tray, and front-panel USB and SATA cables compete for the same narrow gap. A board that mounts physically can still leave connectors hard to plug in or force tight cable bends.

Collisions with drive cages, fans, and radiators

The extra width extends toward the front of the case. In an older ATX case, that is often where a drive cage, a front fan, or a radiator sits. A front radiator plus fans already uses a lot of depth. The

ACEGEEK guide to GPU and radiator clearance math

explains why clearances must be added together instead of checked one at a time. An oversized board adds another item to that sum.

Different mounting patterns on SSI-EEB-sized boards

Corsair notes that the EEB mounting hole pattern is not the same as ATX, despite similar width. The CEB size (305 × 266.7 mm), by contrast, shares the ATX I/O area and many mounting holes. Corsair says it can often work in ATX-friendly chassis, with a check. A consumer board near 267 mm wide is closer to that CEB footprint. The E-ATX label alone does not tell you which hole pattern a given board uses, so check the board's manual drawing.

Which Board and Case Combinations Are Reasonable?

The table below is a qualitative risk guide, not a measured test result. Actual fit depends on the specific case and board.

Is "It Fits" the Same as "It Is Supported"?

No, and this assumption causes most of the expensive mistakes. Buyers often measure the tray, see enough room, and conclude the board will work. That tests one dimension. It does not test support at every hole, connector reach, or cable bend radius. It also does not test whether the board can be removed later without disturbing the cooler.

There are narrow cases where a forced fit is defensible. Examples are a bench build, a temporary test rig, or a roomy older chassis with a board only slightly wider than ATX. Even then, you are accepting unsupported mechanics. For anything shipped to a client, deployed in a fleet, or expected to be serviced and moved, a case with listed E-ATX support costs little compared with a bent board or a returned system.

The opposite assumption also deserves a second look: you do not necessarily need a full tower. As the ACEGEEK E-ATX guide notes, some mid-tower cases support E-ATX boards. Choose by the maximum supported board width and the full component layout, not by the tower label. For how case size relates to board form factor, see this overview of

. Buyers new to case sizing can start with the

first PC case guide covering size, airflow, and budget

How Do You Check E-ATX Compatibility Before You Buy?

Follow this sequence and stop at the first failure:

Large boards can pair with high-power GPUs and heavy cooling, so airflow matters too. The

covers airflow, radiator fit, noise, and dust alongside clearance.

What Should You Send a Manufacturer or Supplier Before Ordering?

For a bulk order or a custom workstation build, vague questions get vague answers. Provide:

Do not rely on improvised supports or removed drive cages as a substitute for a listed specification. This matters most on systems other people will use.

Can I put an E-ATX motherboard in an ATX case?

Only if the case supports E-ATX or the manufacturer confirms your board model. A narrow board may physically fit an ATX case, but extra mounting holes may lack standoffs, and cutouts or drive cages may interfere.

Can an ATX motherboard go in an E-ATX case?

Usually yes. E-ATX cases are generally built to accept smaller form factors. Confirm that the case lists ATX support, and move the standoffs to match your ATX board's holes.

Are all E-ATX motherboards the same size?

No. Consumer boards labeled E-ATX vary in width, and the 305 × 330 mm size is associated with SSI-EEB. Check your board's exact dimensions against the case's maximum supported motherboard width.

Not necessarily. SSI-EEB is a defined 305 × 330 mm server standard with its own mounting pattern, while consumer E-ATX is a loose label. A case that lists E-ATX support may not list SSI-EEB.

Do I need a full tower for an E-ATX motherboard?

Not always. Some mid-tower cases list E-ATX support. Choose based on the maximum motherboard width, GPU and radiator clearance, and cable access, not on the full-tower or mid-tower label.

What are the risks of forcing an E-ATX board into an ATX case?

The main risks are unsupported board edges that flex during installation, blocked cable cutouts, difficult front-edge connector access, and collisions with drive cages or radiators. Standoffs that touch the back of the board can also cause damage.

How Should You Choose the Right Option for Your Project?

Start with the board, not the case. Record its exact width and mounting hole layout, then shortlist only cases that list support for that width. When a specification is unclear, get written confirmation from the manufacturer before ordering. Then run the full-build checks above before you place the order.

The case lists E-ATX support and, ideally, a maximum motherboard width that equals or exceeds your board's width.

Standoffs can be placed under every mounting hole on the board, including the extra holes along the wider edge.

Connectors along the board's front edge stay accessible, including the 24-pin power connector, USB headers, and SATA ports.

A case that satisfies only the first condition on paper can still fail the third in practice. That is why the sections below break the fit into separate checks.

Why "E-ATX" Does Not Describe a Single Board Size

E-ATX is not a strict consumer standard. Corsair's explanation of SSI-EEB and CEB boards describes the SSI-EEB server size as 305 × 330 mm.

The ACEGEEK E-ATX case selection guide lists several current boards that carry the E-ATX label.

Missing standoff support

Standoffs raise the board off the tray so the solder points on its underside do not touch metal. Wikipedia's entry on computer case screws describes the standoff as providing a margin of space that prevents grounding and short circuits. The tray in an ATX case is drilled for ATX-sized boards. ASUS's motherboard installation guide uses an ATX board with nine screw holes as its example.

In a thread on using an old ATX case for an E-ATX motherboard, forum members suggested it might work if nothing pressed on the unsupported edge.

The ACEGEEK guide to GPU and radiator clearance math explains why clearances must be added together instead of checked one at a time.

For how case size relates to board form factor, see this overview of how to choose the right PC case. Buyers new to case sizing can start with the first PC case guide covering size, airflow, and budget.

How Do You Check E-ATX Compatibility Before You Buy?

Follow this sequence and stop at the first failure:

Get the board's exact dimensions from the manual or manufacturer specification page, not from a retailer's category label.

Find the case's supported form factors and maximum motherboard width. If only "E-ATX" is listed, ask the manufacturer to confirm your board model.

Compare the board's mounting hole drawing with the tray's standoff positions. Every hole should land on a standoff, and no standoff should touch the board where there is no hole.

Check front-edge connector access. Confirm where the 24-pin, front-panel USB, and SATA connectors sit relative to the cable cutouts.

Add up the cooling and GPU clearances with the larger board in place, particularly front radiators and fans.

Check the rest of the build. CPU socket, memory, power supply, and GPU length are separate checks. A full PC part compatibility process catches interactions a single parts checker may miss.

Large boards can pair with high-power GPUs and heavy cooling, so airflow matters too. The 2026 gaming PC case buying guide covers airflow, radiator fit, noise, and dust alongside clearance.

What Should You Send a Manufacturer or Supplier Before Ordering?

For a bulk order or a custom workstation build, vague questions get vague answers. Provide:

Exact board model and form factor, plus the manual's dimension and mounting hole drawing.

Case model and revision, because tray layouts can change between production runs.

Cooling plan: air cooler height, or radiator size, thickness, and mounting position.

GPU model and length, including the power connector orientation.

Front-panel and drive cabling requirements, including how many drives will be installed.

Quantity and delivery schedule, since specification changes mid-order are costly.

Sample requirement: for repeat or volume purchases, ask for one unit to test-fit before committing.

What If You Already Own the ATX Case?

You have three realistic options:

Switch to an ATX board if the platform allows it. This avoids the problem.

Replace the case with one that lists E-ATX support and your board's width.

Ask the case manufacturer in writing whether your specific board is supported, and keep the reply.

Do not rely on improvised supports or removed drive cages as a substitute for a listed specification. This matters most on systems other people will use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is E-ATX the same as SSI-EEB?

Fan Header Current Limits: How to Avoid Overloading a Motherboard

Most motherboard fan headers are designed to power one or two fans, not an entire case. Add a splitter, a daisy-chained fan cable or a hub, and the combined current can exceed what the header's power circuit is rated to deliver. The working rule is straightforward: add up the maximum rated current of every fan on a header, and keep the total below the header's published limit. On many boards that limit is 1A (12W), although some headers are rated higher.

Applying the rule correctly is harder than stating it. Startup surges, high-current fans, pumps and hubs all change the answer. This guide explains how to read header ratings, calculate a realistic load, choose between a splitter and a powered hub, and document fan wiring so a multi-fan system does not damage the board it is built around.

What Does a Fan Header Current Limit Mean?

A fan header current limit is the maximum current, in amps, that the motherboard's fan power circuit is rated to supply through one connector. Multiply it by 12V to get the power rating in watts.

Manufacturers publish this in the motherboard manual. The

, for example, lists CPU_FAN, CPU_OPT and CHA_FAN1 through CHA_FAN3 at a maximum of 1A and 12W each. That is one board. Other models, and particularly pump or AIO headers, can carry different ratings, so the manual for your exact board is the only reliable reference.

The rating belongs to the header, not to the number of connectors. A four-way splitter has four plugs, but it still draws from a single header. The relevant question is never "how many fans fit?" but "what is the combined current draw?"

There is also a specification-level reason not to equate a header with a fan count. Intel's

(revision 1.3, September 2005) allows a compliant fan to draw up to 1.5A in steady-state operation at 12.6V. A single fan built to that ceiling would exceed a 1A header by itself. Most case fans draw far less, but the gap shows why the fan's own rating must be checked, not assumed.

How Do You Calculate the Total Current on One Fan Header?

Add the maximum rated current of every device connected to the header, then compare the sum with the header's current rating.

Noctua's guidance on connecting multiple fans to one header

follows the same method. Take each fan's maximum input current from its specification, sum them, and make sure the result stays below the header's maximum.

Worked examples against a 1A (12W) and a 2A (24W) header

The first two rows use figures published by the fan vendors. Noctua lists up to 0.14A for that model.

NZXT's explanation of how many fans a motherboard header can run

uses three 0.55A fans totalling 19.8W, and notes that most headers are rated 12W or 24W. The last two rows are hypothetical and exist only to show the arithmetic.

The first two rows also show why fan count misleads. Three fans can use 0.42A or 1.65A, a fourfold difference, depending on the model.

Illustrative example: nine fans, three headers

Consider a hypothetical system with nine fans, each rated 0.25A. The total is 2.25A, which no 1A header can supply. Splitting them three per header gives 0.75A per header. That is below the rating, but it leaves little margin if a fan's real maximum is higher than the label suggests. Moving the load to a SATA-powered hub removes the question from the motherboard entirely. The trade-off is one more component, one more cable and a single tachometer signal for monitoring.

Does startup current change the calculation?

Yes. Steady-state ratings do not describe the moment a fan starts. The Intel specification allows the start-up current of a compliant fan to exceed 1.0A, up to 2.2A, for no more than one second. If several fans on one header spin up together at power-on, their starting currents overlap.

Real fans often spike well below that allowance. The ASUS manual cited above lists only a steady maximum for each header, with no stated tolerance for startup surges. Buyers should therefore ask the fan supplier for start-up current, and leave margin rather than sizing to the exact steady-state sum.

Splitter, Daisy Chain or Powered Hub: Which Changes the Current Path?

A passive splitter or daisy-chained fan cable only shares the header's output among more fans. It does not add capacity. A powered hub changes the current path because the fans draw from the power supply instead of the header.

, its NA-FH1 hub supplies up to 54W when SATA power is connected, but only up to 24W when it is not. That implies a hub running without its SATA connection still draws fan power through the motherboard. Check the hub's input arrangement before treating it as an isolated supply.

Many hubs return the tachometer signal from only one fan, so BIOS monitoring shows one RPM value for the whole group. For connection diagrams and the lighting side of hubs, see the guide to

daisy-chaining ARGB fans and using a fan hub

Which Devices Need Extra Attention on a Fan Header?

Four categories deserve a closer look before they share a header with anything else.

Fans designed for high static pressure, radiators or high-airflow use can draw several times the current of a low-power case fan. The 0.14A and 0.55A examples above are both 120mm-class fans. Treat the fan's current rating as a separate purchasing specification alongside size, RPM and airflow.

Connector pin count tells you the control method, not the current. A 3-pin DC fan and a 4-pin PWM fan can both draw the same current, and both count against the header rating. For a plain-language comparison of the two control methods, read the ACEGEEK explanation of

A pump is not a fan, and its current requirement should come from the cooler manufacturer. Connect it to the header the cooler's documentation specifies. Do not put it on a general-purpose fan hub unless the manufacturer permits that arrangement. Radiator fans can be controlled by coolant temperature or CPU temperature, as covered in the guide to

coolant temperature vs CPU temperature for fan control

. The sensor choice changes the control signal, not the current each fan draws, so the header limit applies either way.

Addressable lighting uses separate 5V headers with their own ratings. The ASUS manual cited above lists the Addressable Gen 2 header at a maximum of 3A at 5V, with a combined limit of 500 LEDs across the board's addressable headers. That limit does not offset or add to the fan header limit. Once the power side is within rating, consistency of color and effects is a separate task, which the article on

keeping lighting consistent in multi-fan builds

Why "The Fans Run Slowly" Is Not a Safe Reason to Exceed the Rating

A common assumption is that a quiet fan curve lowers the load enough to ignore the rating. That reasoning holds only partly. At lower PWM duty cycles the average current generally falls, but a header rating has to cover the highest-load state the system can reach, not the typical one.

That state can include cold start, a BIOS fan test, a user changing the profile to full speed, or a fault condition that raises fan speed. In each case, the overloaded part is the board's power circuit, not the fans. If the sum of maximum fan currents is well under the rating, none of this matters. The assumption becomes a problem only when the total is close to or above the limit, which is exactly when people reach for it.

Whether a given header includes overcurrent protection is rarely stated. The ASUS manual cited above publishes a current and power rating for each header but says nothing about protection behavior, and no source reviewed for this article confirmed protection across boards. The safe approach is to treat the published rating as a hard limit and not rely on the board to cut off an overload.

What Should Buyers Specify Before Approving a Fan Layout?

For system integrators, case or cooler product managers and procurement teams specifying fan bundles, the electrical load is a specification item, not an installation detail. Before approving a multi-fan layout, document and verify the following:

If the supplier cannot provide fan current data, treat that as a risk in itself. A layout cannot be verified without it.

How many fans can I connect to one motherboard fan header?

It depends on the fans' combined maximum current and the header's rating, not on connector count. Three 0.14A fans total 0.42A, while three 0.55A fans total 1.65A. Add the figures and keep the sum below the header's published limit.

What is the typical fan header current limit?

Many headers are rated 1A (12W), as in the ASUS PRIME B650M-A AX manual. NZXT notes that some are rated 12W or 24W. Some boards rate selected headers higher. Always confirm the figure in the manual for your exact motherboard.

Does a fan splitter increase the current capacity of a header?

No. A passive splitter or Y-cable shares the header's existing output among more fans. The total current still flows through the same header, so the combined fan load must stay below that header's rating.

Use one when the summed fan current approaches or exceeds a header's rating, or when many fans share one speed signal. The hub draws fan power from the PSU. Confirm its power input, because some hubs revert to header power without SATA.

Only if the cooler manufacturer explicitly permits it. Pumps have their own current and control requirements. Use the header the cooler's documentation specifies, which is often a dedicated pump or AIO header rather than a general chassis fan connector.

Does running fans at low speed protect the header?

Not fully. Lower PWM duty usually reduces average current, but the rating must cover startup, full-speed tests and profile changes. Size the load to maximum fan current, with margin, rather than to quiet-mode operation.

Does ARGB lighting count toward the fan header limit?

No. Addressable lighting uses separate 5V headers with their own ratings, such as the 3A at 5V listed in the ASUS manual. Check the lighting headers separately from the 12V fan headers.

The ASUS PRIME B650M-A AX user manual, for example, lists CPU_FAN, CPU_OPT and CHA_FAN1 through CHA_FAN3 at a maximum of 1A and 12W each. That is one board. Other models, and particularly pump or AIO headers, can carry different ratings, so the manual for your exact board is the only reliable reference.

There is also a specification-level reason not to equate a header with a fan count. Intel's 4-Wire PWM Controlled Fans Specification (revision 1.3, September 2005) allows a compliant fan to draw up to 1.5A in steady-state operation at 12.6V.

Noctua's guidance on connecting multiple fans to one header follows the same method. Take each fan's maximum input current from its specification, sum them, and make sure the result stays below the header's maximum.

Find the header rating. Look for "max. current" or "max. power" in the manual's fan header table.

Find each fan's maximum current. Use the label or specification sheet value at 12V, not a typical or "average" figure.

Include everything on that header. Splitter branches, daisy-chained fan cables and any hub powered from the header all count.

Compare with a margin. A practical engineering margin, not a manufacturer requirement, is to stay well below the rating rather than at it.

Move the excess. Redistribute fans across headers or use a PSU-powered hub.

Which Devices Need Extra Attention on a Fan Header?

Four categories deserve a closer look before they share a header with anything else.

High-current fans

Fans designed for high static pressure, radiators or high-airflow use can draw several times the current of a low-power case fan. The 0.14A and 0.55A examples above are both 120mm-class fans. Treat the fan's current rating as a separate purchasing specification alongside size, RPM and airflow.

AIO pumps and radiator fans

A pump is not a fan, and its current requirement should come from the cooler manufacturer. Connect it to the header the cooler's documentation specifies. Do not put it on a general-purpose fan hub unless the manufacturer permits that arrangement. Radiator fans can be controlled by coolant temperature or CPU temperature, as covered in the guide to coolant temperature vs CPU temperature for fan control. The sensor choice changes the control signal, not the current each fan draws, so the header limit applies either way.

ARGB lighting

Addressable lighting uses separate 5V headers with their own ratings. The ASUS manual cited above lists the Addressable Gen 2 header at a maximum of 3A at 5V, with a combined limit of 500 LEDs across the board's addressable headers. That limit does not offset or add to the fan header limit. Once the power side is within rating, consistency of color and effects is a separate task, which the article on keeping lighting consistent in multi-fan builds addresses.

Common Fan Header Mistakes

Sizing by connectors. A splitter with six ports does not mean a header can power six fans.

Using typical current instead of maximum. Header ratings are limits, so fan figures must be maximums too.

Ignoring the fan model. Mixing a 0.14A fan and a 0.55A fan on one header makes the group's load hard to guess by eye.

Daisy-chaining a pump. Pumps have their own current and control requirements.

Connecting a hub without its PSU power. The hub then pulls its load through the header.

Treating one RPM reading as a fault. Many hubs report one fan's tachometer signal by design.

What Should Buyers Specify Before Approving a Fan Layout?

For system integrators, case or cooler product managers and procurement teams specifying fan bundles, the electrical load is a specification item, not an installation detail. Before approving a multi-fan layout, document and verify the following:

Header map per motherboard model. Record each fan header's maximum current and power from the manual, and note which headers are intended for pumps. A full PC part compatibility check already counts fan headers, ARGB headers and USB headers, so add header ratings to that list.

Fan electrical data. Request the maximum steady-state current at 12V and the start-up current for each fan SKU, plus the connector type.

Fan groups and total load. Show the summed maximum current for each header or hub, with the margin applied.

Hub specification. Confirm the power input (SATA, Molex or header), the port count, the total output limit and which port reports RPM.

Pump arrangement. Follow the cooler manufacturer's specified connection.

Validation test. Run a cold start and a full-speed fan test on a sample build and confirm every fan spins and reports normally. This checks function, not electrical margin, so it supports the calculation but does not replace it.

If the supplier cannot provide fan current data, treat that as a risk in itself. A layout cannot be verified without it.

When do I need a SATA-powered fan hub?

Use one when the summed fan current approaches or exceeds a header's rating, or when many fans share one speed signal. The hub draws fan power from the PSU. Confirm its power input, because some hubs revert to header power without SATA.

Can I plug an AIO pump into a fan hub?

How to Measure AIO Clearance Before Ordering a PC Case

A case page that says "supports 360mm radiator" tells you where an AIO cooler's mounting holes are. It does not tell you whether the radiator, its fans, the tubes, the memory and the graphics card can occupy the chassis at the same time. For anyone ordering cases, whether for a single build, an office rollout or stock for resale, a wrong assumption means a return, a rebuild or a batch of cases that cannot take the intended cooler. Measuring AIO clearance comes down to three checks: the radiator's footprint in its mount position, the stack depth it adds above the motherboard or in front of the GPU, and the room the tubes and pump need. This guide explains which numbers to collect, how to calculate margins, and what to ask the case maker when a figure is missing.

AIO clearance is the total usable space a case gives an all-in-one liquid cooler once the radiator, fans, fittings, tubes and the neighbouring components are all installed. It is not one number. It combines the radiator's length, width and thickness against the mount's limits, the stack depth against whatever sits beside it, and the tube and pump geometry.

Support is also stated per position. NZXT's

lists several of its cases that take a larger radiator in the front than in the top, so a listing that reads "420mm supported" may apply to one location only. Before measuring anything, write down the exact mount position you intend to use. If you want a broader checklist alongside this measurement method, ACEGEEK's guide to

covers the same ground at a higher level.

Step 1: Compare the Radiator's Real Dimensions With the Mount Limits

Use the cooler maker's dimensional specification, never the nominal size. The "360mm" label comes from three 120mm fan positions, and the radiator body is longer because of its end tanks. NZXT's

What Does AIO Clearance Include?

AIO clearance is the total usable space a case gives an all-in-one liquid cooler once the radiator, fans, fittings, tubes and the neighbouring components are all installed. It is not one number. It combines the radiator's length, width and thickness against the mount's limits, the stack depth against whatever sits beside it, and the tube and pump geometry.

Support is also stated per position. NZXT's radiator mounting guide lists several of its cases that take a larger radiator in the front than in the top, so a listing that reads "420mm supported" may apply to one location only. Before measuring anything, write down the exact mount position you intend to use. If you want a broader checklist alongside this measurement method, ACEGEEK's guide to AIO radiator compatibility and case fit covers the same ground at a higher level.

Step 1: Compare the Radiator's Real Dimensions With the Mount Limits

Use the cooler maker's dimensional specification, never the nominal size. The "360mm" label comes from three 120mm fan positions, and the radiator body is longer because of its end tanks. NZXT's Kraken Elite specification page lists the Kraken Elite 360 radiator at 401 × 120 × 27 mm. ACEGEEK's explanation of why an AIO radiator is longer than 360mm compares several published models in the 394–401mm range.

Then find the case's limit for the same position, in all three dimensions. Fractal Design's Summit radiator support page, modified on 2 September 2026, is a useful example because it publishes length, width and thickness for each position. For a top-mounted 360mm radiator it lists a 404mm maximum length, 135mm maximum width and 63mm maximum thickness including fans.

Run the Kraken Elite 360 against those limits:

Length: 404 − 401 = 3mm spare.

Width: 135 − 120 = 15mm spare.

Thickness: 63 − (27 + 26) = 10mm spare, using the 26mm thickness NZXT lists for the included F120P fans.

On the single-radiator limits, it fits. The same Fractal page then shows why one position can have several sets of limits. It lists a maximum simultaneous combination of a 360mm radiator in the top, a 360mm in the front and a 120mm in the rear, and gives recommended top maximums of 398mm length, 122mm width and 30mm thickness for that combination. Against the 398mm figure, the 401mm radiator is 3mm over. The page does not say whether that 30mm figure includes fans, so a buyer planning that layout would need to ask. Front-mount limits on the same page also change depending on whether the lower air guide is fitted, from 40mm maximum thickness with the guide to 65mm without it.

The lesson for ordering: the limit that applies is the limit for your configuration, not the headline number.

Step 2: Calculate Radiator and Fan Stack Depth

Stack depth is the distance the cooling assembly extends from its mounting surface into the chassis. A working formula:

Stack depth = radiator thickness + fan thickness + hardware allowance + service margin

Fan thickness varies, so use the exact fan model. The Kraken Elite example above is 27mm plus 26mm, or 53mm, not the 52mm you get by assuming 25mm fans. A 38mm radiator with 25mm fans reaches 63mm, which would match the Summit's top limit exactly and leave nothing for screw heads, pads or tube bends. That 63mm figure is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a statement about a specific cooler. ACEGEEK's article on how radiator thickness breaks otherwise compatible builds tabulates more combinations, including push-pull, where a second fan layer adds its full thickness again.

A thicker radiator is not automatically the better purchase. Extra thickness can add fin depth and coolant volume, but it also adds airflow restriction, installed depth and routing difficulty. NZXT's mounting guide makes a related point: radiator size and fan setup affect cooling more than mount position, and a 360mm radiator in the front outperforms a 240mm in the top. For a tight case, a larger, slimmer radiator in a clear position is often the safer choice than a thicker one wedged against memory. That is a conditional judgment. A thick radiator with strong static-pressure fans in a roomy case with generous top offset can still be right, and none of the sources reviewed for this article included a controlled thick-versus-slim test.

Step 3: Measure the Space Above the Motherboard for Top Mounts

A top-mounted radiator usually fails in the band above the motherboard, where memory, VRM heatsinks, EPS power connectors and fan headers share the space. Stack depth alone does not decide the outcome. The case's mounting offset, meaning how far the roof rails sit from the board, determines whether the fan frame hangs over the DIMM slots or beside them.

If you own a sample case with the motherboard installed, measure from the surface where the fan frame will sit down to the top of the tallest part beneath it, then compare that gap with your stack depth. If you are ordering blind, you need three published or requested figures: the top offset, the exact memory module height, and the board's top-edge heatsink height. ACEGEEK's top-radiator clearance guide describes RGB memory kits reaching roughly 42–45mm, against about 31–35mm for low-profile modules, so memory choice can change the result as much as radiator thickness does.

If a top radiator collides, the options run from least to most disruptive: an offset bracket or alternate position from the case maker, shorter memory, a slimmer radiator or slim fans (which change airflow and noise), or moving the radiator to the front and re-checking the GPU.

Step 4: Subtract Only What Enters the GPU's Path

A front radiator takes space from the graphics card's length axis. A top radiator usually does not. The formula, as set out in ACEGEEK's GPU and radiator clearance math for tight cases, is:

Usable GPU length = published case clearance − radiator − fans − bracket − reserve margin

In that guide's illustrative example, a 340mm case with a 30mm radiator, 25mm fans, a 5mm bracket and a 10mm reserve leaves 270mm. If the fans sit outside the card chamber, the same case leaves 295mm.

The common error is double-counting. ACEGEEK's piece on the GPU clearance measurement buyers miss with a front radiator shows the effect with a hypothetical 400mm published clearance. If that figure assumed an empty front mount, installing a 27mm radiator with 25mm fans removes 52mm. If the figure already included 25mm front fans, the radiator adds only 27mm. Always ask under what conditions the case maker measured its GPU number. Also use the exact GPU model, because board-partner cards often differ in length and thickness from reference designs, and leave room on the width axis for the power cable.

Step 5: Check Tubes, Pump Height and Serviceability

Tubes need room to leave the end tank without a tight bend, and the pump determines which positions are valid at all. NZXT's guidance is that the highest point of the radiator should sit above the pump cap, because air collects at the highest point in the loop, and it does not recommend bottom-mounting an AIO radiator. A mount that clears every component but puts the radiator below the pump fails the check regardless of millimetres.

Finally, simulate service. Can you remove memory without detaching the radiator? Can the GPU latch be reached? Can fans be replaced without disturbing the loop? These are fit questions, not afterthoughts.

This table is a qualitative planning aid. The figures for each cell must come from the case and component makers, not from the table.

Does a Positive Margin Mean It Will Fit?

Not necessarily. A margin calculated from published numbers is a paper margin. It excludes sheet-metal tolerance, fitting protrusion, cable bend and the hand room needed to install and later service parts.

ACEGEEK's guides apply practical rules rather than standards. Its radiator guides prefer 5–10mm of spare space where the radiator sits near memory, heatsinks or cables, and its GPU worksheet treats 20mm or more as comfortable, 5–9mm as risky and 1–4mm as paper compatibility only. These are planning preferences, not industry requirements, and some builds work with less. Treat them as a way to decide which combinations to confirm with the manufacturer before ordering.

The axis with the smallest margin decides the outcome. A radiator with 15mm of width margin and 3mm of length margin has 3mm of margin.

What to Specify and Ask Before Ordering

For a single build, the parts list is enough: case model and mount position, radiator dimensions and fan thickness, exact RAM model, motherboard model and exact GPU model. For batches, integrators and distributors, add three habits.

Check against the worst-case part. If your bill of materials allows more than one memory kit, motherboard or GPU, measure against the tallest, longest and thickest option, not the most common one.

Rank the evidence. A dimensional drawing or manual for your configuration is stronger than a spec table, and a spec table is stronger than product photos.

Dry-fit a sample before the volume order. One unit with real parts installed settles top offset, tube reach and service access in minutes.

When a case maker does not publish a figure, send the exact part numbers and ask for the figure in your configuration: top offset, the GPU limit with the intended radiator and fans installed, and whether published limits include fans. A specific question usually gets a more useful answer than "will it fit?"

What Should You Verify Before Placing the Order?

Confirm four things. The case lists support for your radiator size at your chosen position. The radiator's real length, width and thickness fit that position's limits in your configuration. Stack depth clears your memory and motherboard hardware. The GPU still enters and leaves without removing the radiator, and the radiator sits above the pump. If any axis has under a few millimetres of margin, treat it as unconfirmed and get it checked.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AIO radiator clearance?

AIO radiator clearance is the usable space for the radiator, fans, fittings and tubes after nearby components are installed. It includes radiator length, width and thickness against the mount limit, plus space above the motherboard, in front of the GPU, and for tube routing.

How do I check whether an AIO fits a case I have not bought?

Collect the radiator's dimensions and fan thickness from the cooler maker, the case's limits for your exact mount position, and the dimensions of your RAM, motherboard and GPU. Calculate margins on each axis, then ask the case maker to confirm any tight combination.

How much clearance margin should I leave?

There is no industry standard. Builder guides commonly suggest 5–10mm near memory and heatsinks, and more along the GPU axis. Treat any combination within a few millimetres on one axis as unconfirmed and verify it with the manufacturer before ordering.

Does a front radiator always reduce GPU clearance?

Only when the radiator or fans enter the card's length path. Some cases place fans outside the main compartment, and some published GPU limits already include front fans. Subtract only the additional intrusion, plus bracket and reserve margin, not the full stack by default.

Why does one 360mm AIO fit one case but not another?

The "360mm" label describes the fan layout. Cases differ in length, width and thickness limits per mount position, in top offset and in internal accessories. The same cooler can pass one case's limits and exceed another's, even when both advertise 360mm support.

Can I mount an AIO radiator at the bottom of the case if it fits?

NZXT does not recommend it. Bottom mounting places the radiator below the pump, so air can collect in the pump housing, causing noise, weaker cooling and a shorter pump life. Physical fit does not override the pump-height rule.

Measure AIO radiator clearance before ordering a PC case: check radiator size, fan stack depth, RAM and GPU space, tube routing and what to ask the case maker.
